What shall I ask for the coming year?

THE WAR OF 2005 

I see a picture that is hard to describe with words. It is 
about war and conflict. At the highest level is the conflict of the 
ages— God against His wicked opponent. At the lower level is 
humanity struggling together— often with one another. I see a 
connection here— that the struggle on high is the background for 
the lower, earthly ones. 

Wars make up much of secular history. Similarly the 
Church of Jesus Christ has a history of conflict. From the great 
councils that determined direction for the future of Christianity, 
to the decisions of each individual servant, we see not only the 
hand of the Lord, but the evil enemy desperately trying to have 
his way. In our time, congregations (not Christ's Church) are 
dividing. God's Church is not divided. Jesus prayed that we 
would be one, and it will be so. Individuals are also dividing 
from one another. It is a time of self-determination and the 
privilege of choice. 

With these struggles in mind, we turn to God's Word as the 
answer— the explanation of these events so close to us all. 
Where would we be without revelation? What if we had no 
idea of the meaning of what we see? God has graciously given 
us His Word. It will stand forever. It is our hope in all the 
changes that perplex us. "The entrance of thy word giveth 
light; it giveth understanding unto the simple." 

In this War of 2005, it is difficult to identify the enemy. 
Satan cleverly works through people; he hides behind humanity. 
But God also works though His servants. We are not in the 
dark, but can have the light of God's Word. Because the 
conflict is "personalized," that is, expressed through people, we 
may think individuals are enemies. Not so! We need to see that

higher level struggle as the basis for all the lower conflicts. The 
enemy is Satan and his host. It is falsehood, deceit, and evil- 
competition and lust, pride and self-esteem. But how are we 
sufficient to make war against these? We aren't. We need help, 
the help God has promised in the person of His Holy Spirit. 

Whose side are we on? Is it sometimes hard to tell? Satan 
would have it so--that is one of his tricks. Doubts and fears are 
his tools. That is why faith is so basic. We cannot please our 
Captain without it. 

Are we separated from the world? We must be if we are in 
any way to understand the conflict. If we have a desire to serve 
God but our affections are not totally divorced from the world, 
we will have difficulty identifying the enemy and we may resist 
the only Help we have. 

The call is to come out. Rev. 18:4 is relevant today: 
"Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partaker of her 
sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues." To "come out" is 
not to make it known what individuals we are for or against, but 
what tricks of the adversary we will not tolerate! Are we still 
partly slave to lust and self? The outward symbols our 
forefathers recommended are supposed to signify personal 
victory. God forbid that we appear to the world as Christians 
and have no inner victory over the real enemies of our faith. 

I propose that we be clear on what the enemy is and where 
the battle lines are drawn. In the War of 2005, the enemy does 
not have the same form as it did in 1881 or 1913 or 1708. The 
issues of those years seem simple to us. Perhaps it is hard to 
see our battle lines because we are so close. It is hard to be 
totally objective or really discern our own case. What we allow 
is more significant than whom we agree with, for we wrestle 
not against flesh and blood. 

Today the temptation comes through TV and other worldly 
delicacies, to just accept and be entertained. One man said he 
was going home after work to watch a movie in the evening.

Video stores are flourishing. Sonora is considering building a 
new theatre for live plays in town. The local Indian casino on 
our block just moved into larger quarters. Internet evil is so 
available. The other day I dialed a number about our phone 
service. It evidently was wrong because I heard the directions 
to hang up immediately if I were younger than eighteen! The 
Church is not affected by these things? Let us not be so naive. 
To have rules against them is not the total answer. The real 
battle is in the heart. 

We are also being tested by prosperity. What will we do 
with our abundant resources? Some are living and giving 
sacrificially. We have been personally benefited from the 
generosity of our brethren. It is still more blessed to give than 
to receive. May God help us to see the real needs around us« 
near or far away. What we have is really not our own. 
Remember the early Church and how they laid their possessions 
at the apostles' feet and called nothing their own. 

We still believe in the paramount importance of the new 
commandment that we love one another. We prove our 
discipleship by our love and obedience to Jesus our Master. We 
prove our love to one another by the way we treat each other 
and the things we say about one another. This love does not 
just happen. It is not like physical love which is more 
spontaneous. Part of the battle is to keep this agape love in our 
hearts. If we lose it we have lost the War of 2005. 

So our battle lines are around our love for righteousness 
and our hatred for iniquity-our love for people but not love for 
the world. Our defense is our love and submission to God. 
Our words, our affections, our thoughts, our outward 
appearance, our conduct with one another will indicate where 
we stand in the war. 

God will win in that upper conflict. He will give us victory 
also in our personal battles when we let Him direct and be the 
Captain of our salvation. --L.C.

CHANGE 

It is my intent to stimulate thought on the subject of change. 
Some change is good. Some change is bad. When something 
never changes, it is eternal! Time is change. Natural life is 
continuous change. 

Consider the following Scriptures: 

"For I am the Lord, I change not." (Malachi 3:6) 

"And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the 
earth lifted up his hands to heaven, and swear by him that liveth 
for ever and ever. . .that there should be time no longer." 
(Rev. 10:6) 

"Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not 
pass away." (Matt. 24:35) 

Malachi records God's eternal being. The revelator 
announces the cessation of time. Matthew records the eternal 
qualities of God's word. 

When Adam and Eve chose to violate God's word, they 
separated themselves from the unchangeable God who is the 
source of all life. Man became subject to time and change. The 
time and change allotted to man culminated in death, a state of 
being which is not subject to change. This would be the end of 
mankind except for the unchangeable nature of God. 

The Apostle John tells us that God is love. (I John 4:8) By 
reason of His love God prolongs time, thereby giving 
opportunity for the lost to accept Jesus into their life and be 
changed from being subject to eternal death to receiving eternal 
life. This is the most vital change humans have the opportunity 
to make. 

I have very briefly discussed change at its most importance. 
Change is also a factor in day to day and year to year living. An 
elder once said if change is for the betterment of living or 
worship, then there is valid reason to consider change, but if

change is to accommodate the desires of the flesh or to become 
more like the world, then we should resist change. 

One of the most serious changes a man can make is to alter 
the meaning and context of God's word. In our study of the 
major cults of the world, we find this to be a common practice 
in their teachings. This is called sophistry. It is important that 
we become well versed in the Bible so we can testify to those 
who would challenge our understanding of the word, for Jesus 
said, ''My word will not pass away." God's word does not 
change. 

May we stay close to the Lord and His word so that when 
"there should be time no longer" we may be found with the 
Lord where we shall no longer be subject to time and change.

GOD WILL MAKE A WAY-PROVIDE DELIVERANCE 

In Exodus we have one of the most vivid accounts of the 
Lord's providing deliverance. Israel, after 400 years of dwelling 
in Egypt, was leaving that land of bondage to take possession of 
the land promised to Abraham. What a feeling of mixed 
emotions must have accompanied their exodus with their 
children, possession, and unaccustomed wealth given by their 
former task masters! 

Fifty miles into the journey, by the shore of the Red Sea, 
they pitched camp for the first time, tired but no doubt happy. 
The reality of freedom at last was beginning to sink in. If only 
they could have known that Pharaoh hadn't completely learned 
his lesson and in his rage was hotly pursuing with an army bent 
on vengeance. (14:5-9) Fear and panic soon seized that camp 
as Pharaoh's cloud of dust made clear that trouble was on the

way, and rather than turn to the pillar of cloud, i.e. Jehovah 
their Deliverer, they sought to blame Moses (v. 11,12). Moses 
stands firm in his trust in God (v. 13,14). God instructs Israel 
to continue as they had been and then, as only He can do, sets 
about accomplishing the seeming impossible (v. 15-22). What a 
way! Dry ground where once had been ocean bed, with a wall 
of water on either side! This was no mere receding tide or 
shallow, marshy way. This was complete escape-total 
deliverance! 

Stubborn, unyielding Pharaoh pursues to the end. God had 
dealt very sternly with his resistance and yet he persists in his 
way v. 23. All those who set themselves in opposition to God, 
whether it be to persecute His children or refuse to turn from 
their own way and follow Christ, should tremble at the 
realization that God has His eye of judgement on you. Oppose 
God and reap the consequences. (Pro. 13:13-15) Cast yourself 
on His mercy, and He will guide and nurture. (Ps. 25:4-14) If 
only this could have been the last time the children of Israel 
needed to be reprimanded and reminded of God's providential 
care-if only they would obey His way. Many did, and to this 
day they stand as examples of faith and hope for all believers. 
Moses (Ex. 33:12-15); David (Ps. 5:8, 139:2); Ezra (Ez. 
8:21). 

Israel long remembered crossing the Red Sea, but their 
recurrent disobedience pointed out the need of man to free his 
conscience and answer the call: "Come out from among them 
and be ye separate," in a spiritual sense. Prophets foretold the 
time to come when God would effect just that way. (Jer. 31:31- 
34; Isa. 35:5-10). It is true that in the Old Covenant God had 
provided a code of ethics and obedience that was true and 
good, but it couldn't save man's soul from its bent and tendency 
to fall away and sin. (Gal. 2:16; Rom. 8:1-4) Never one to 
leave loose ends or any relevant act undone, Christ, in 
implementing a new way of deliverance, also fulfilled the law's

requirement of sacrifice for atonement as the spotless Lamb for 
all time and all people. (Heb. 9:8-14; 10:9-10) 

Jesus r mission was clear: salvation to all men. (John 3:16- 
17; 12:32; 14:1-4; Matt. 20:28; I Tim. 2:4-6) Christ wants 
man's confidence and trust, for not only does He know their 
need, He has the very thing they need. And many times He said 
what was coming to pass. And if they could then have seen the 
bigger picture as they did later, it would have been clear. They 
did know the way; they had both heard and seen the 
personification of it. John 14:6: This is not blasphemy as He 
proved the truth of it, nor is there any confusing its meaning. 
Christ is the only one who can claim this: 1.) for it is by Him 
we are saved. (John 12:32; Matt. 1:21; Acts 4:12; 10:43; Rom. 
10:13; I Tint 2:5-6; Heb. 2:9; 10:19-22), and 2.) it is only 
through Him, His example and teaching, that you and I, 
empowered by His Spirit, can live sanctified, successful 
Christian lives. (John 14:15-23; Rom. 5:6-10; H Cor. 4:10-11; 
Eph. 4:1-6; Col. 3:1-17) 

Jesus provided more than just a way to redemption, 
justification, and glory. He provides strength and revelation to 
undertake and overcome in whatever we encounter. (Rom 
11:36; Phil. 4:13) Whether it be witnessing, giving or receiving 
counsel, resisting temptation (I Cor. 10:13; Heb. 2:18), 
appearing in court for His testimony (Mark 13:11), all will be 
possible through Jesus who causes us to shine as lights in a 
world of darkness. A light illuminates by its internal energy and 
so does the Christian in his way and manner. Only by this 
promise, "I am the way/ 1 could Paul with all truth and 
confidence say, "I have fought a good fight. . ."(II Tim. 4:7) 
God has likewise promised to never forsake us. (Matt. 28:20; 
Heb. 13:5-6) 

Take the worst situation you can find, and God will make a 
way. Surely nothing was ever worse than man's separation and 
estrangement from God, and He has provided a way for man's

return. (Luke 1:37) It may not be the way we would choose or 
could even imagine. (Isa. 55:8) Israel may not have chosen to 
go between those walls of water, and Jesus declares in Matthew 
7:13-14 that the gate is strait and the way narrow. But how 
about your Red Sea? In your exodus from the land of bondage 
to sin, toward the land of promised eternity, do you ever feel 
the harassing of your old taskmaster Satan behind you? And 
there in front of you is a seeming impassible gulf of 
discouragement. There you are trapped between your fears and 
trepidation to go forward, and the surety that to turn back 
would be utter ruin. How did Moses put it? (Ex. 14:13-14): 
Call on the Lord, and placing Himself between you and the foe, 
He will make a way appear through whatever may be the 
problem. Wedged between a rock and a hard place is not bad if 
Jesus is the rock. (Pro. 3:5-6) Ben Cover

THINGS THAT HINDER 

Jesus said: ". . .When the Son of man cometh, shall he find 
faith on the earth?" Without faith it is impossible to please 
God. Men have faith in many things. The word says; "Faith 
cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." We can 
depend on our Creator for He cannot He. Jesus said, "If thou 
canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth." Also 
we are instructed to "ask in faith nothing wavering (doubting). 
For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the 
wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive 
anything of the Lord." (James 1:6,7) 

Another reason that hinders receiving is a lukewarm 
condition, a lack of love, for there is no commandment greater 
than to love God with the whole heart. "And whatsoever we

ask, we receive of him, because we keep Ms commandments, 
and do those things that are pleasing in his sight " (I John 3:22) 

Traditions can be good and traditions can be bad. Jesus 
said, "Ye make void the commandments of God by your 
tradition." He also told Satan: "Man shall not live by bread 
alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of 
God." The word of God teaches to grow in grace and in the 
knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Those who 
are born of the Spirit hunger and thirst after righteousness. 
They have received a love for the truth, and the truth makes a 
man free. He is not in bondage to a boxed-in condition where 
growth is feared. "And he gave some, apostles; and some, 
prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and 
teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the 
ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come 
in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of 
God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the 
fullness of Christ." (Eph. 4:11-13) 

The brethren have strong teaching on nonconformity, and 
we believe this is right, but if we lack transformation with a 
renewing of our mind to prove what is that good and acceptable 
and perfect will of God, (Rom. 12:2) we have failed what God 
has designed. To be separate and to put off the old man is 
right, but if we have failed to be crucified and die that Christ 
might reign in us, we have only a form of godliness but lack the 
power. Not until Jesus truly becomes our Lord can we have the 
light of life. To be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus is 
to have the divine influence. When the eye is single, the whole

HISTORICAL 

The following article appeared in the very first issue of The 
Pilgrim, October, 1954. Brother Dan Wolf tells his purpose in 
beginning a publication for our own little fellowship. --L.C. 

Dear reader-Brother and Sister in Christ and the Faith of 
the Gospel— We are sending this new publication into your 
home, hoping it will find a welcome and your support for its 
continuance. We have long wished for a church paper to be 
published for our own membership, and believe that others may 
have felt the same. 

We believe we can have a paper which should first and 
primarily serve the needs of the members of The Old Brethren 
Church, and at the same time present items of interest which 
could be both useful and edifying to our friends and 
acquaintances and Christian readers in general into whose hands 
it may come, whose interests and problems may be the same as 
ours. 

Many of us have, perhaps one or more, religious papers in 
our homes which are published by other denominations, and 
find them both entertaining and edifying. And then there are the 
"non-denominational" papers with much good selective reading. 
But still none of these can serve the particular needs of the 
members of our church as well as a paper published for, and 
directed to them. 

The non-denominational effort may have its worthy and 
sincere advocates and points of interest. But it is our opinion 
that it is more limited in its effectiveness than efforts which are 
directed to some one in particular. Because of its own nature, it 
fades into a generality that lacks responsible reception and 
application. 

We do not think our attitude and motives are selfish in 
proposing to publish a paper for our own church members any

more than we think it selfish for the member of any particular 
household to attend to the needs and interests of their own in a 
particular way, and at the same time be a good neighbor and 
citizen in the community in which they live. 

We are sending this paper into your homes on trial If it 
meets your approval, we hope by the Grace of God and your 
support to continue its issue monthly. We plan to have a 
column for those who are interested in church history (of the 
Brethren Church in particular, and the historical Christian 
church in general) and to bring forward various writings of our 
early brethren, elucidating the historical doctrine and faith of the 
apostolic faith of Christians in past ages. 

We also hope to present in each issue some Scriptural study 
or reading in such a manner as to be interesting to members' 
children and young people. 

We will solicit articles for publication, also church news and 
announcements. We especially solicit subscriptions from our 
members, and that will be the principle means by which we may 
know of your interest and support of this work. Our 
subscription rate will be $1.50 per year. We will send this paper 
free to any one upon request who may wish to have it and 
cannot pay the $1.50. Subscriptions are also solicited from 
friends and acquaintances of the members. 

We propose to send the three remaining issues for 1954 
free, and hope for your subscriptions for the new year, 1955. 

With Christian greetings this work is now submitted.

FOR YOUTH 

Frustration Overcome by Acceptance 
Billy was frustrated. Almost every nail bent and refused to 
drive into the wood. He was about to give up when George 
tapped him on the shoulder. "Try rubbing the nails in you hair 
before you pound them," he said with a twinkle in his eye. 
"Your hair's oil will lubricate the nail so it goes in easier." 
Taking the hammer, he continued, "Here, hold the hammer like 
this, further away from the head. That way your swing will be 
more powerful." Smiling, George gave Billy the hammer. 
"Don't give up. Practice makes perfect." 

Billy grabbed a nail. Gripping the hammer as instructed, he 
rubbed the nail in his hair and started to pound. It worked! He 
was sure glad to know some of the tricks of the trade. Why, up 
until now, George had seemed kind of. . .well. . .stem and 
rather old. Billy didn't know how old George was, but he knew 
that George didn't even have a computer, and always drove 
pretty slow. "Oh well, he was sure nice today." he said to 
himself as he pounded another nail into place. 
At lunchtime, the men washed up and gathered in a circle. 
Someone asked George to pray. Peeking through half-closed 
eyes, Billy saw George take off his hat and bow his head. Billy

quickly closed his eyes as George prayed. "Father in Heaven, 
thank You for this beautifid day. Thank You for the food, and 
Lord, thank You for these boys who are here helping today. 
Please bless them and us as we serve in Your Kingdom In 
Jesus' name. Amen." evening his eyes, Billy felt thankful and 
wanted. His frustration was gone.

A new year, a fresh start,

CHILDRESS PAGE 

Healthy Eating 

Can you handle another rat lesson? Some of you in Indiana 
are planning an experiment on rats to see of rats are healthier 
when fed "healthy" food than when they are fed "junk" food. I 
think they will gladly cooperate. There is not much they will 
not eat, and they stockpile food. They will weary themselves 
with "stocking up" if given the opportunity. 

One time when I was cleaning my rats' cages, one of my rats 
disappeared into the trash can and came out with a very smelly,

slimy old bone. Obviously they do not worry whether 
something is good for them! 

I do not th i nk you would want to chew on a smelly old 
bone, but there are a lot of foods we do eat which are not very 
good for us. I really do not like calling them "junk food." They 
are food, and if we were starving, they would help keep us 
alive. But we are not starving, are we? 

It is wise to eat only small portions of such foods and not 
have them very often. It is wise to take care of our bodies. It is 
sin to be greedy or to overeat. (I step on my own toes when I 
say that.) 

Luke 21:34 says, "And take heed to yourselves, lest at any 
time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting and 
drunkenness. . ." Those are things I wouldn't do. . .at least I 
thought so until I looked up "surfeiting" in the dictionary. I 
hope you will look it up, too. 

I hope you also learn good eating habits now, so you will 
not have to struggle with poor eating habits later.

HARD OF HEARING? 

"What did you say?" 

"I SAID, 'YOU DON'T HEAR AS WELL AS YOU USED 
TO!*" 

It's true for most of us older ones. Our systems just seem to 
wear out. But though our ears don't work as well, we can still 
hear in the most important way. Jesus said, "Take heed 
therefore how ye hear." (Luke 8:18) He also said, "Take heed 
what ye hear." (Mk. 4:24) If we are to "take heed," we have a 
choice in hearing, and we are responsible for what and how we 
hear. Sometimes we need to listen carefully. Other times we 
need to close our ears or simply walk away. 

To have difficulty hearing with our ears is not nearly so bad 
as being "dull of hearing" as the writer charges in Hebrews 5:4. 
Hearing in this case involves our "spiritual ears." Jesus said, 
"Let these sayings sink down into your ears." This too means 
more than being sensitive to the vibrations of sound. 

Some question whether there is sound when no one is there 
to hear it— for example, the crash of a falling tree in a remote 
forest. Since sound is vibrations through air (or other material) 
the sound is there even if there are no ears to hear. 

This reminds us of the Gospel being sounded out in areas 
where people do not receive it. The "sound" is there but the 
hearts are letting it pass "unheard." 

To heed a sound that we hear is to act on it. If we are on 
the track and we hear a train coming, we move out of the way. 
Similarly, if we hear the sound of the Gospel including the 
warning of coming judgment, we should prepare for that great 
time. God has provided the means through His Son's death for 
us, so we must hear and heed.

In the days when our deacons had a short testimony at the 
close of a sermon (Some still have this practice.), one dear 
brother usually said we should take heed to what we have 
heard. Such simple advice, but so profound and necessary. 

Jesus said at the close of each of the messages to the seven 
churches of Asia (Rev. 2 and 3), "He that hath an ear, let him 
hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches." What would He 
say to the churches in America? Would we hear it? Already 
God has spoken to us. We can buy a Bible today for one dollar. 
The sound is going out. Will we hear, or are we becoming hard 
of hearing. — L.C. 



CAUTIONS IN BIBLE STUDY 

Often we run into new Bible teachings or explanations for 
doctrines or Bible passages and we wonder, "How can I tell if 
this is what the Bible really is teaching?" Perhaps this encounter 
comes while we are reading a book someone has recommended, 
or just sharing in a conversation with a Christian friend. 

IVe observed many occasions where I have heard something 
new to me, but when I compared it with Scripture I was 
surprised to discover that I'd believed something wrong! This 
was especially true when my wife and I were coming to the 
plain churches and heard "new" teaching. For example, when 
Jesus said we shouldn't kill our enemies, that's exactly what He 
meant; and Paul's instructions for Christian women included the 
literal command to cover their heads when praying or 
prophesying. These and other passages had been "explained 
away" by previous well-meaning Christians who said the Bible 
didn't mean what it says. 

On the other hand, you too have probably also been faced 
with supposed Bible teachings that, on further examination, 
really don't square with the whole counsel of God.

How can we tell the difference between the false teaching 
and Biblical truth? 

For me, there are four key elements to determining what is 
really true. I have found that, with prayer for direction by the 
Holy Spirit, these principles can give me assurance that I 
understand correctly what God wants me to believe. 

Let's look at them first negatively, then take some positive 
lessons from them. 

1. When verses are pulled out of context, and not all 
applicable verses are regarded, it's a warning sign. 

Religious groups support some really off-balance doctrines 
by picking a verse here and there to support their positions, 
rather than taking the entire context of what God's Word has to 
say on a particular subject. Or they take a minor statement and 
make the rest of Scripture submit to their interpretation of that 
particular verse. 

I heard a Bible teacher quote Matthew 13:34: "All these 
things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without 
a parable spake he not unto them" The teacher then 
interpreted all the teachings of Jesus as parables with hidden 
spiritual meanings, often contradicting the simple meaning of 
Christ's actual words. 

Another minister, when promoting a new understanding of a 
doctrine which was flatly contradicted by Jesus' actual words, 
stated, 'TVe heard we cannot use the statement of Jesus to the 
woman at the well because her previous husbands had probably 
died." The minister refused to allow the whole counsel of God 
to temper his doctrine. How do we know that the men had 
died? This background information wasn't found in the Bible, 
but was man's opinion, used to change the teachings of our 
Savior. 

Further examples are the commentaries by dispensational 
teachers who try to explain that Jesus' teachings in the Gospels 
were mainly directed at Jews and will come to pass in the

future; therefore Gentile Christians today need to only ohey 
doctrines found in the Epistles. Thus, arbitrarily choosing this 
and that to fit their theology, they twist and ignore Jesus 1 
teachings. Being raised under dispensational teaching, I came 
to the point of realizing that as a Christian, I hadn't been taught 
to follow Christ; I had been taught to mainly follow the 
Apostles! 

Therefore, Bible study principle number one is that it is 
absolutely imperative to compare all of what God has revealed 
in His Word on a particular subject in its entirety. 
2. When a teacher has to go back to ancient cultural 
practices to explain his doctrine, it's a red light. 

We can suppose that in the beginning, God merely formed 
the outline of expected culture, and as He further revealed His 
Word and His will, He made more clear His expectations for 
our behavior. The fullest understanding of His expectations 
would then be found in the New Testament. Looking farther 
back in time, and the farther away from Bible-influenced culture 
we wish to study (even to remote, primitive tribes today), we 
will not find better cultural practices, but more degenerated 
ones. If a group promotes the thought that we need to look to 
ancient pre-flood history to interpret New Testament doctrine 
correctly, then what may be in error is their interpretation. 

Once again from personal experience, the "secret rapture of 
the church" at the beginning of the tribulation was taught to me 
to be supported by the Jewish marriage custom of the bride and 
groom leaving the wedding party for seven days, etc. Ancient 
culture from Adam's, Moses', or Jesus' time may support 
correct Bible teaching, or it may not. It certainly doesn't prove 
it, however, as our basis for faith and practice must only be 
what the Bible teaches. 

Bible study principle number two, then, is to hold God's 
infallible Word as the final judge. Historical and other evidence 
must submit to the Bible.

3. Word searches from the wrong sources can lead us down 
the wrong road. 

It may be interesting to look at what the dictionary says 
about a word in our Bibles, but let's be careful not to go too far. 
Many plain people seem to forget the Bible wasn't written in 
English. Remember, the original Hebrew and Greek words 
were put into our language. If we then take the English 
translation and go off on a tangent based on the Webster 
Dictionary's listing of synonyms, root words, etc., this can lead 
us astray from what God intended the original word to convey. 

At the same time, many plain people are afraid and 
distrustful of using simple lexicons which help us more fully 
understand the Greek and Hebrew. If used carefully, these can 
be a blessing. We should take caution, however, when a group 
puts on display the supposed meaning of a key word or two 
which supports their arguments, but neglect to take into 
account the fuller meanings of verses which speak against then 
position. 

For instance, consider what Jesus said to Simon Peter in 
John 21. In English it says that three times Jesus asked him, 
"Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these?" We 
may wonder why Jesus asked the same question three times. 
Looking at our Strong's Concordance, however, we can see the 
touching interaction was so much deeper. Jesus asked Peter the 
first two times using the Greek word "agapao" (#25 in 
Strong's). We can study this and see that this is the deep, 
sacrificial, self-denying love which Jesus had for us. Each time 
He asked, Peter responds in English, "Yea, Lord; thou knowest 
that I love thee. " but the word used is different. It means "I 
like Your" or "I have affection for You. 11 No wonder Peter was 
grieved that Jesus had to change the question the third time. 
The third time Jesus lowers His level and basically asked Peter, 
"Hast thou affection for me?"

This is a positive example, but we need to beware that we 
can get carried away with side meanings of words in these study 
aids and soon arrive at a supposed meaning for the verses we 
are studying which departs from God f s intended understanding. 

Accordingly, principle three is to be sure we not only 
compare all the verses on a particular topic, but also be sure we 
are not picking and choosing just part of definitions we may 
study or lookup. 

4. Bible teachers who claim to have discovered new or 
exclusive truth ought to raise a red flag. 

I have heard Bible teachers say, "Truth is not always 
determined by a majority." Some make the point that since 
their teaching is not popular it is correct, for they are on the 
"narrow path. " Both these points can have merit. 

But Scripture also says ". . .in the multitude of counsellors 
there is safety." (Pro. 11:14, Pro. 15:22, Pro. 24:6) II Peter 
1:20 also provides a position of safety: "Knowing this first, 
that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private 
interpretation. " 

We should be able to find plenty of godly believers who 
agree with our understanding of Scripture, both among our 
contemporaries and also those of past generations. Once we 
have compared what the Bible says and feel we understand a 
particular doctrine correctly, we ought to be able to find that 
the greater brotherhood also agrees with this. Then perhaps we 
will discover that the wider circle of plain churches have taught 
this same understanding for many years. 

If we are presented with a doctrine for which only a handfiil 
of people can find support, there is a clear danger signal. The 
New Testament has many warnings for people who pervert 
doctrine, wresting it to their private interpretation. 

On the positive side, take as an example the position our 
church has on divorce and remarriage. First, we can see that 
the Scripture clearly teaches it is wrong. Then we can study a

little in the Greek study aids in our libraries and confirm our 
understanding. Finally we can find that the plain churches of 
our day, and historically the conservative churches at large, 
nearly unanimously also saw it the same way. Another example 
is "trine immersion baptism. 1 ' We can find the Bible teaches it, 
many groups have understood it the way we teach it in our 
brotherhood, and that history records the early Christian church 
also practiced Christian baptism in this same manner. 

To repeat, principle four is that we should be able to find 
plenty of godly believers who agree with our understanding of 
Scripture. 

In conclusion, as the end times approach, our spiritual 
enemy will throw any darts he can to confuse, discourage, and 
divide us. When faced with conflicting opinion on what the 
Bible teaches we can find truth and light, as the Spirit gives us 
wisdom, by following consistent principles of Bible study. 

May the Lord grant to us that we may ". . . Grow in grace, 
and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To 
him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. " (II Peter 3:18)

Men who will stand before His face and hear His voice 
daily. 

Men who have no desire for anyone or anything other than God 
Himself. Men who fear Him so greatly that they love 
righteousness and hate iniquity in all their ways. Men who 
would rather die than sin, even in their thoughts or attitudes. 
GOD NEEDS MEN! 

Men whose daily lifestyle is one of taking up the cross and 
pressing on to perfection. Men who are full of the Holy Ghost, 
rooted and grounded in Calvary type love. Men whose hearts

are clothed with a humility that neither human praise nor 
spiritual growth can remove. Men who tremble at God's Word 
and would not neglect to obey the smallest commandment. 
GOD NEEDS MEN! 

Men who are firm, diligent, and hardworking; yet they can 
relax and enjoy playing with their children. Men who know the 
joys of a disciplined life and are not afraid of hardships. Men 
who have mastered their desire for fancy food and are not 
enslaved to music, sports, or any other legitimate activity. 
GOD NEEDS MEN! 

Men who are so deeply rooted in the security and love of 
their heavenly Father that they tremble not at man or devil. 
Men who trust God in all matters and rest in His Almighty, 
Sovereign power. Men who find their joy and their delight in 
God alone and are full of the joy of the Lord. 
GOD NEEDS MEN! 

Men who live by the promptings of God's Spirit and deny 
their own desires. Men who live constantly under the anointing 
of God's Spirit, endowed with gifts from above. Men who can 
trust God for all their needs, who never hint about their material 
needs, nor ever boast about their labors. GOD NEEDS MEN! 

Men who are not stubborn, but gentle, open to criticism and 
correction from other brethren. Men who can never be 
influenced by wife, children, relatives, or friends to cool off 
even slightly in their devotion to Christ, GOD NEEDS MEN! 

Men who will never compromise but stand alone for the 
truth without fear or favor of men. Men who will train their 
children to the glory of God and preserve a Godly seed on the 
earth. Men who discern all of life from heaven's point of view 
and make decisions in the light of eternity. 
GOD NEEDS MEN! 

Men who pray effectual, fervent prayers with an unceasing 
faith. Men who labor for the glory of God, not for earthly 
treasures or earthly honors.

God needs men with Spiritual Authority. 

God needs men of Christlike character. 
O God, our God in this our day, 
Raise up men who walk this way. 
Help us to wail; help us to pray

CHRISTIAN SCHOOL VIEWS 

Gleanings from Parent- Teacher Meeting by Amos Martin 

All the answers of life are in the Word. Learn to know God 
better through His Word. This will show us more His 
greatness. (II Peter 1:3) 

God instituted the home. His guidelines must be followed 
for success. God did not randomly make these laws. He made 
them because He is God. He often reminded Israel of who He 
is: "I am the Lord." These guidelines for a righteous life 
parallel who God is. 

Every time a man divorces a wife, he is breaking a marriage 
covenant and the parallel of Christ and the church. God knows 
what is going on in a troubled home without needing to see a 
bill of divorcement in the courthouse. Is the wife submissive? 
Is the man dealing treacherously with his wife? 

II Kings 2:1-13 tells of when Elijah went to heaven in a 
chariot of fire. EJisha was a student of Elijah's. It was common 
for them to call the prophet "father" and the student "son." 
Elisha's parting request to Elijah was, "Let a double portion of 
thy spirit be upon me." 

Are we willing for our children to receive a double portion 
of our spirit? (They will whether we like it or not.)

What is our spirit? It is a form of attitude that we carry and 
develop through life. If a brother comes to talk to me in the 
spirit of love, you know what our conversation will be like. But 
if a brother comes with a rebellious spirit, we also know what 
his attitude is. A godly attitude gives a godly perspective which 
is a viewpoint of eternity. A brother offends us, but what is that 
compared to eternity? Our perspective sets the perspective of 
our children. They automatically sense where we are. The Suit 
of the Spirit is a godly attitude. Love has to be acted upon. 
Our perspective affects every area of life— even our table 
conversation. 

Honor thy parents. How long do we do this? All our lives 
if we want to obey God. When our children see this, they learn 
our attitude. We teach them through our own relationship with 
our parents. 

A man had a poor relationship with his children. He was 
too busy making money. He never earned their respect, and of 
course he never had it. 

A mother related how her own mother yelled at her as a 
child. She determined not to be like that but found herself 
yelling at her own children. This pattern was learned. 

God gives everyone gifts. We all have one somewhere. He 
placed us here, knowing us, our families, and even our church 
setting before He created us. He wants us to use our gifts to 
bless those around us, even our own family. 

Psalm 139:14-16: "We are fearfully and wonderftdly 

made. . . in thy book all my members were written." There are 
30,000 DNA in each human being. These DNA are commands 
to decide what color our hair is. . . how long our nose is. God 
wrote all this out, we know not how. Do we measure up to 
what God planned for us? 

Judas betrayed Christ for thirty pieces of silver. He only 
sold himself How much are we worth? What will we sell

ourselves for? There is a void to fill in each heart. Only the 
Holy Spirit can fill it rightly. 

Our values determine the work we do, the friends we 
choose, the social life we lead, and our outlook of life. Godly 
values can help us be church supporters and willing to help our 
neighbor. How are we looking at the church where we 
commune? Critically or supportive? Our children will sense 
this and get a double portion of our spirit. 

What is our attitude toward the ministry, the school board, 
the township authority, and the laws of the land? What is 
important to us? Our children will pick it up. What we teach 
them now will be there for life. 

Many problems stem from poor father/son relationships. A 
child who can never please Dad has the impression that he 
cannot please God either. There is security in knowing Dad 
cares by disciplining at the right time. Children reared like this 
can depend on God. A child gets the image of God through the 
image of his Dad. 

The heart has four parts: emotion, thoughts, conscience, 
and will. Thoughts that pass the conscience become our will. 
(I will do this; I will not do that.) Parents need to develop a 
good, pure conscience in a child. This will be a controlling 
factor for life. 

God is not so concerned with how much money we make, 
but with the relationship we have with our family. Are you 
satisfied if your children receive a double portion of your spirit?

FOR YOUTH 
INFLUENCE 

The sermon last Sunday was on the birth of Jesus. This 
birth brought life and change into the world. Change requires 
preparation. God sent John the Baptist, talked to Zecharias in a 
vision, to Joseph in a dream, and to Mary through Gabriel in 
preparation for this change. 

Jesus' birth also brought light. How needful is this in our 
lives? It is more important than anything else! In the account 
of the ten virgins, the foolish ones did exactly as the five wise 
did except for having enough oil. While they went to buy more, 
the door to the wedding was shut. Yes, this light is a matter of 
eternal life or eternal death for us. 

It was also brought out that we are to be the light of the 
world. We are a city set on a hill that cannot be hid. Just as a 
match that's lit in a cave draws everyone's attention, so it is with 
light in this world. People do notice us. 

How brightly are we shining? Thoughtless actions can 
cause our light to go out in people's minds. How are the 
constant changes we make affecting our light?

This made me think of something else. There is a Church of 
the Brethren near us. One day when I went past, their sign 
announced their upcoming 150th anniversary celebration. 
Brethren history intrigues me so I decided to look up this 
congregation. I found that the original building was erected in 
1854 and is the oldest building still being used by the Church of 
the Brethren in Northern Indiana. In 1907 a sister was 
dismissed for insisting on wearing a hat instead of the head 
covering. In 1914 it was voted to drop passing the holy kiss 
around the table after the supper at communion. These were 
listed among other items of church business. 

Clara Gunderman, a 102-year-old Dunkard Brethren lady 
our young folks sing for quite often, remembers being at this 
church for some special meetings. This was before the Dunkard 
Brethren organized. Today this church is radically different 
from Sister Gunderman. 

Looking at this congregation now, I see very little of their 
light left. This group has the same historical roots as ours and 
once taught the doctrines of nonresistance, nonswearing, and 
nonconformity as we do. What happened? 

Much of the change came so gradually it was hardly 
noticeable. Some probably came because the young people 
were embarrassed about some of the "peculiar" teachings and 
practices. Could that be said of us? 

How can we prevent this from happening to us? We need 
to know why we believe what we believe and then act on it. 

We might not think we influence those around us, but 
although we will never have the scope of influence Jesus did, 
we do have an impact on others. 

To the youth reading this and also for myself: We are the 
future church. Where will our congregation be in 150 years?

PETTE'S SONG 

I have a pet bird named Petie. He likes to sing. He sings 

pretty songs and funny songs. He tries to mimi c what I say 

often, and he has learned to laugh like I do when he sings funny 

songs. 

But Petie has a problem His feet hurt. His feet are so bad 
he might not even live. Birds cannot he down and put their feet 
up like we can. They are always on their feet unless they are 
flying. Petie is in a cage, so he cannot fly much. He is always 
standing on those sore feet. He tries to pick them up, but of 
course one is always down. Poor Petie! But Petie still sings! 

Do you sing when you hurt? Do you sing when you are 
sad? It is hard to sing when something is wrong, but if we can 
sing anyway, it really can help us feel better. It can help others 
feel better. And if they are good songs, it will make God 
happy, too!

THE MOST IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIP 

Good relationships make good sense. Our world is 
increasing in population every day. The longer we live, the 
more acquaintances we make. We are blest if these contacts 
become true friends. We are blest above measure if our contact 
has been made with the truest Friend, the Lord Jesus Christ. 
This is the most important relationship. 

Because we do not see Jesus with our eyes, it is necessary 
that we believe His Word. We know Him by His Word. This is 
faith, and without faith it is impossible to please God. 

God's Word centers around the coming of Jesus the 
Messiah. His death and resurrection are at the heart of the 
Christian faith. In our Northern Hemisphere, the springtime 
with its revival of plant life, coincides with the time of year 
Jesus died and rose again in victory over Satan. 

Our very future depends on knowing this crucified and risen 
Saviour. Beside this knowledge— this relationship— nothing else 
has importance. Paul wrote to the Corinthians: "For I 
determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus 
Christ, and him crucified." Paxil said his coming to them was 
not with excellency of speech or of wisdom. In fact, he said the 
wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. Also ". . .the 
foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God 
is stronger than men." 

I try to keep all this in mind when I wade through articles 
defending Creationism. Perhaps it is important to meet unbelief 
and the myth of evolution on their own terms. But for most of 
us, the need is simply to believe and to become acquainted with 
Jesus who gave His life to become acquainted with us.

Please understand, we are certainly on tlie side of those who 
counter evolution with the concept of "intelligent design." 
They delve into recent discoveries of the microscopic make up 
of our bodies and find more evidence of the skill of our Creator. 
To speak of "intelligent design" seems to some to be more 
"scientific" than to name that intelligence Jesus Christ. We need 
not apologize for pointing to God's Word and worshipping the 
Author. 

The best course is simply to believe the record God gave of 
His Son. Do we really believe God spoke to Jesus on the 
Mount of Transfiguration and said, "This is my beloved Son, in 
whom I am well pleased; hear ye him"? If we do, we need no 
other proof. 

Do we believe Jesus when He said, "I have power to lay 
down my life and I have power to take it again; this 
commandment have I received of my Father"? When we 
believe Him, we come to know Him It is the same with our 
relationships with one another: we must believe what our 
friends say or there can be no real trust or harmony. 

I like the thought in a hymn by Dora Greenwell in the 
1800's: 

/ am not skilled to understand 

What God has willed, what God has planned; 

I only know at His right hand 

Stands One who is my Saviour. 
And in the one by Lidie H. Edmunds: 

/ need no other argument; 

I need no other plea. 

It is enough that Jesus died, 

And that He died for me. 
This is a good time to reaffirm our belief in our Saviour. 
Jesus said (John 12:24): "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except 
a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: 
but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. " I believe Jesus

referred first to Himself. But He also gave us a principle for 
our lives. We are "crucified with Christ; nevertheless (we) 
live." We are to be "dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God 
through Jesus Christ our Lord." 

As we contemplate the death and resurrection of Jesus, may 
we do our part to know Him better. May we believe He died 
and rose again ("believing is seeing'*) so that we can carry that 
message to an unbelieving world. — L.C. 



OUR RISEN LORD 

The resurrection of Jesus: the greatest single event 
recorded in the history of man! It is the basis for the Christians' 
hope of life beyond the grave. It has brought forth the most 
noble expressions of pathos and emotion ever expressed by 
human lips. Herein lies the faith of Christianity- a realization 
that we will not always be surrounded by sin, sorrow, aches, 
and pains, but that in God's own time, a new body, a new day, 
and a new and glorious life will dawn on us. It will never know 
an end. Eternity! Eternal life without anything to mar the 
complete happiness of the redeemed soul! All this and more 
hinges on the resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord. 

The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene. . . Peter 
and John running to the sepulchre. . . John looking into the 
tomb; "and he saw and believed." Mary stood without weeping 
and heartbroken. "Woman, why weepest thou?" she was asked 
of the angels. "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I 
know not where they have laid Him." Jesus said unto her, 
"Woman, why weepest thou?" Not knowing it was the risen 
Lord and supposing Him to be the gardener, Mary said, "Sir, if 
thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him 
and I will take him away." Jesus saith unto her, "Mary." This 
was the voice of the King of Kings calling to the depths of an

anguished soul. It caused Mary to utter a word which every 
soul should say when they hear the call of Jesus. "Master." 
Only one word, but what a depth of meaning it has! The 
Master of our souls; a willingness to follow where He leads; a 
trust in One who has mastered the art of living a perfect life. 
He was tempted in all points as we-yet without sin. He is the 
hope of the world because He has vanquished the hosts of sin 
that Satan arrayed against the spotless Lamb of God. He had 
the power to lay down His life and He had power to take it 
again. This commandment He had received of the Father. The 
resurrection— the greatest miracle of all ages. 

Let us go back to the night before the resurrection morning. 
Pilate had given authority for a watch to be placed around the 
tomb. The stone was sealed to make sure that no one would 
steal the body of Jesus. Soldiers under the Roman law were to 
be put to death if they went to sleep during a watch. 
Everything that man could do was done to keep the Lord in the 
tomb. What a sad story it would be if he had accomplished it! 

Early in the morning there was a great earthquake, for the 
angel of the Lord rolled back the stone from the door of the 
tomb and sat upon it. No Roman soldier dared challenge that 
glorious being. All they could do was tremble in fear till they 
became insensible and fell down as dead men. The angel's 
countenance was like lightning and his raiment white as snow. 
Power and purity, two forces that challenged the physical and 
the spiritual part of sinful man. I do not doubt that some of 
those Roman soldiers became Christians. They were told to say 
that while they slept His disciples came by night and stole the 
body of Jesus. Who but the soldiers would tell it? 

Jesus rose from the dead! A living, glorious Lord who 
appeared to many of His followers. Jesus had appeared to all 
the disciples but Thomas. The others said unto Thomas, "We 
have seen the Lord." Thomas replied, "Except I see in his 
hands the print of the nails and put my finger into the print of

tie nails and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe." 
Thomas must have been very impressed with the crucifixion and 
had no doubt that Jesus was dead. After eight days, again His 
disciples were within and Thomas was with them: then came 
Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in their midst and said, 
"Peace be unto you." Then saith He to Thomas, "Reach hither 
thy finger and behold my hands, and reach hither thy hand and 
thrust it into my side, and be not faithless, but believing." And 
Thomas answered and said, "My Lord and my God!" This from 
the bottom of a doubting soul which never was to doubt again. 
If only all Christians could say the same words with the same 
conviction, great would be the witness. 

"The Lord is risen indeed," said the two who saw the Lord 
on the way to Emmaus. This is just another basic truth that is 
necessary for us to have firmly fixed in our hearts. There is no 
other fact so abundantly proven in the history of man as the 
resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Praise God! The Lord k 
risen indeed.

DENYING OUR RIGHTS 

Nehemiah 5:14-19 
Seeing the Need 

In 539 BC, the Persian emperor Cyrus issued an edict that 
allowed the Jews in Babylon to return to their homeland and 
rebuild their temple. The Jews had been held as captives in 
Babylon ever since Nebuchadnezzar had conquered the 
kingdom of Judah in 586 BC and destroyed the beautiful temple 
that King Solomon had built in Jerusalem. After Cyrus granted 
permission for the captives to return, about 50,000 Jews 
traveled back to their homeland in 538 BC. They rebuilt their 
temple after a delay of about 20 years, but the wall around

Jerusalem remained in ruins. We read in the book of Ezra that 
some attempts to rebuild the wall had been made before 
Nehemiah's time, but these were feeble and futile. The events in 
the book of Nehemiah occurred almost 100 years after the first 
group of Jews returned to Jerusalem. 

Nehemiah lived in Susa, the Persian capital, and was a 
descendant of the Jews who were taken into captivity almost 
150 years before. He had attained the enviable position of 
cupbearer to King Artaxerxes of Persia. Cupbearers were not 
menial servants who simply brought the king's beverages to 
him. They were trusted officials of high rank with the 
responsibility of making sure that the king's drinks were not 
poisoned-an easy way of doing away with an unguarded king! 
When Nehemiah got the report that the walls around Jerusalem 
were still in ruins and the Holy City was thus open to enemy 
attack, he was very concerned. After much prayer, he took 
advantage of an opportunity from the Lord to ask the king for 
permission to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the city's wall. 

In a marvelous answer to prayer and display of divine 
providence, permission was granted. In addition, the king made 
Nehemiah governor and gave him money and supplies to 
accomplish the task. Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem in about 
445 BC and after an inspection of the ruined walls, he 
challenged and organized the fearftd, lethargic citizens to rise 
and build. The people of Jerusalem rose to the challenge, and in 
a great show of determination and hard work, were able to 
finish the project of rebuilding the wall in only 52 days-an 
amazing accomplishment! Parts of Nehemiah's wall can still be 
seen in Jerusalem today in the archaeological excavations of the 
ancient city of David. 
Building the wall 

There are lessons for spiritual wall-building that come to us 
from the book of Nehemiah. In ancient times, walls protected 
cities from enemies and provided security for the citizens to

conduct their lives and raise their families in safety. Just as God 
wanted the city of His temple to be well-defended with strong 
and secure walls, so He wants the temple of His Holy Spirit 
today to be surrounded and protected by strong spiritual walls. 
Each individual today is a temple of the Holy Spirit (I Cor. 
6:19), and believers together as the Church are also the temple 
of the Holy Spirit. (I Cor. 3:16) Thus we see that spiritual wall- 
building is important both on an individual level and a 
community (local church) level. Building strong spiritual walls 
should be a priority for individual believers, Christian families, 
local fellowships, and for the Church. Like the people of 
Jerusalem in Nehemiah's day, too many Christians today are 
content to live in the midst of broken-down, spiritual walls. 

Satan, of course, as the enemy of our souls, will do 
everything possible to prevent us from building strong spiritual 
walls, and keep us content with living in spiritual insecurity. 
Satan doesn't like to see churches that careftilly proclaim the 
entire Word of God, and that disciple and care for the flock. 
Satan doesn't want to see Christians who know God's Word 
well enough to recognize and reject theological error, or detect 
and avoid subtle temptation to sin. He doesn't want committed 
Christians with strong spiritual walls who can defend the faith 
and stand up against the threat of persecution. He doesn't want 
to see strong and secure Christian families where the children 
are protected from evil and the Word of God is consistently 
modeled and careftilly taught. All of Satan's various tactics to 
tear down our spiritual walls are seen in the efforts of Israel's 
enemies to stop the wall from going up in the Book of 
Nehemiah. And all of Nehemiah's responses to overcome the 
opposition are biblical principles for overcoming Satan's 
opposition to spiritual wall-building today. So building strong 
spiritual walls is a major theme in the book of Nehemiah, and 
there are many lessons for us on this subject, (to be continued)

OBITUARY 

MERIAM RUTH COMSTOCK, daughter of Ralph and 
Ruth (Flora) Peters, was born on September 29, 1916, in 
Savannah, Georgia. She peacefully slipped from our presence 
February 8, 2005, in a private home in Goshen, Indiana, where 
she was being cared for, at the age of 88 years, 4 months, and 
10 days. 

She was received into the fellowship of the Old German 
Baptist Brethren in September, 1938, and faithfully served her 
Lord until her passing. 

She was united in marriage to Elmer Harold Comstock on 
February 12, 1938, by Elder Jacob Skiles at his home near 
Rossville, Indiana. Four children were born to this union. Dad 
and Mother shared four days short of 67 years together. 

Mother was a devoted homemaker and gardener. Her kind 
and loving ways will long be remembered. 

Preceding her in death were her parents, one grandson 
Michael Long, and one son-in-law Ralph Warren. 

Surviving are the four children: three daughters, Lois Gish 
and her husband Lyle of North Manchester; Doris Long and her 
husband Larry of Silver Lake; Carol Warren of Wabash; and 
Elmer Dean Comstock and his wife Vickie of Bourbon, Indiana; 
and one sister, Joan Guthrie of Elkhart, Indiana. She was a 
wonderful and thoughtful grandmother of 16 grandchildren and 
38 great grandchildren. 

Mother will be fondly remembered for her love for the 
family and her concern for the Body of Christ. 

After an uplifting and inspiring service at the Funeral 
Chapel, memorial services were held by the home ministers at 
the Yellow Creek Meeting House near Wakarusa, Indiana, on 
Saturday, February 12, 67 years to the day from their marriage. 
Mother's body was laid to rest at the West Goshen Cemetery 
where Elder Elwin (Butch) Young shared Scripture, pointing us

to life with Christ, not death of the body. 'We are confident, I 
say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and be 
present with the Lord. 11 (II Cor. 5:8) "Wherefore comfort one 
another with these words." (I Thess. 4:8)

CHRISTIAN SCHOOL VIEWS 
ARE YOU A ZACCHAEUS 

Zacchaeus was a determined little man. He did not give up 
just because his size put him at a disadvantage. He sensed an 
urgency to see Jesus. He did not turn away from the truth that 
hurt. Zacchaeus is a challenge for us today. 

Can a teacher find an opportunity to see Jesus? Let us think 
of a teacher who has his personal devotions before going to 
bed. But one night he was checking papers until ten-thirty. By

the time lie got to his Bible and prayer, he was too tired to stay 
awake. He crawled into bed, thinking that he could "see Jesus" 
in the morning, but when he awakened in the morning, he 
realized that only by hurrying through the regular morning 
routine could he even be close to being ready when the school 
bell rang! And, of course, if it is that kind of morning, the 
evening is not likely to be much better; and so he starts all over 
again. 

Or maybe it is the school board member who gets home 
from school board meeting at eleven-thirty and has to be up 
early to chore or to hurry off to work. Or maybe it is the busy 
mother with a teething baby, a troubled teenager, lunches to 
pack, and buttons to sew on before school time. 

It is likely that we can do more to alter our circumstances 
than Zacchaeus could. Sometimes it is our own doings that get 
us into a tight spot. But if God has placed us here, then He will 
provide a way through. God made Zacchaeus short, and He 
also made the sycamore tree. 

We need to be looking for sycamore trees. We may need to 
find someone to help us check papers or rock the baby. We 
may need to say no to that supper invitation. We may need to 
take a nap on Saturday afternoon. Do these solutions reveal 
our weaknesses so much that we shy away from them? Are we 
afraid of what someone will think or say? I wonder if anyone 
laughed at Zacchaeus for climbing that tree. It surely revealed 
his problem. But he got to see Jesus, and Jesus understood. 
What else mattered? Now let us make sure that our problem is 
not of our own making; then we can go ahead and climb that 
tree and see Jesus. 

As we are open to the truth, Jesus will come to our house 
and reveal our need to us and change our life, just as He did for 
Zacchaeus.

Not All Rules Are for Everyone 
Church had started. Sally was sitting with Aunt Emma. It 
was fun to sit with Aunt Emma. Church could seem very long 
for Sally, but she knew Aunt Emma would have some things for 
her to play with. That would make church not seem so long. 

Sally saw a pencil and a little tablet in Aunt Emma's purse. 
Sally was sure that tablet and pencil were for her to play with. 
She reached for them. 

"No, no," whispered Aunt Emma. "Not until after prayer." 
Aunt Emma knew Sally would get tired of sitting still sooner if 
she played with her fun things right away. 

Sally wanted to be good. She tried to sit quietly. Then she 
noticed the lady beside her and Aunt Emma, was writing! 

Sally pulled at Aunt Emma's arm. "Aunt Emma," she said 
softly, "she's writing before prayer!" 

Aunt Emma smiled. She looked like she wanted to laugh. 
She hugged Sally and whispered, "That is okay. She is allowed 
to. Not all rules are for everyone. You just do as I say and 
don't worry about other people, okay?" 

Sally nodded, then sat quietly beside Aunt Emma and tried 
to be patient until Aunt Emma let her write in the little tablet.

FELLOWSHIP IN HAITI 

On our way home! What a rewarding experience we have 
had in Haiti! We said goodbye to Elwood and Anita Martin in 
Ft. Lauderdale and headed west to Dallas and then Sacramento. 
It will be good to return to California after the vivid reminder 
once again of how blest we are. 

God is good— to us and to the Haitians. How can we say 
this? Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, 
and how has God been good to them? Their country is tropical 
and could be very productive. Also, if we believe that the 
greatest and best blessings are in Christ, then we can say God is 
good to us and them, though they be without common 
comforts. 

Many are sacrificing to spread the true Gospel to the people 
of Haiti. We were pleased to see the efforts made there by 
Christians— the churches, schools, clinics, food programs, tree 
projects, water wells. There is probably no way the Haitians 
can appreciate all this. 

We were especially glad this time to ride with Elwood and 
Anita up to Fontarabie, leaving the congestion and squalor of 
Port au Prince for the impressive mountains and hollows- 
seeing people very poor but hard working, friendly, and as 
contented as one can be with so little. Here is an area of one 
road but many foot paths. Donkeys are the pickups, and hoes 
are the plows. Steep hillsides impossible for farm equipment 
common in the U.S. are thoroughly cultivated and planted to 
beans, corn, and other vegetables between the banana and 
mango trees and tall-trunk palms. 

Homes are poor, without the conveniences we take for 
granted— electricity, plumbing, handy kitchens, and automatic

washers. Graceful women and girls carry water in plastic, five 
gallon pails balanced on their heads. Meager wages come from 
selling a bit of produce or a few chickens in crowded markets. 
The men prepare the corn crop for storage by braiding ears 
together and hanging them in bunches high on poles through 
holes in the bare trunks of palm trees. 

Martha has taken the assignment to report on the schools of 
Haiti to be published in Christian Light Publications Lightlines. 
So we visited schools. The one at Fontarabie had been 
dismissed for the seminar; we saw empty classrooms except for 
a small geometry class preparing for a coming government test. 

The seminar and evening meetings were well attended, 
climaxing in the Sunday morning service when a crowd of 
possibly 500 including children were fed both a rice and bean 
meal and vivid sermons in Creole by Missionary Brother Renae 
Klugston and native pastors. Singing groups from several 
neighboring churches sang special hymns with true Haitian 
enthusiasm. 

We had our own room in Pastor Milo's humble home. His 
visitors increased as the seminar progressed. We enjoyed their 
hospitality and saw it extended to many others-both black and 
white. There seemed to be "always room for one more." 

Perhaps our biggest regret was our language barrier with all 
but a few: our faithful interpreters, Milo and Rollin, and others 
who knew some English words. The friendliness, the 
fellowship, and the Spirit of God crossed this barrier. 

Particularly impressive to me was Milo's series of six 
sermons on "Moral Purity." The subject is vital, not only in 
Haiti but in our country as well. Many pastors from nearby 
churches also shared in various ways. 

It was relaxing to spend a night at Mennonite Gospel 
Mission (a Wisler-Horning project) hosted by Elizabeth Shaum 
and Cathy Fry. We stopped there on our way up and met 
Laverne and Margie Martin's family, but they left for the states

before we returned. We spent two comfortable nights at Blue 
Ridge and had two delicious suppers with Dan Otto and the 
staff there. We were glad to see abundant, much needed rain 
the last night in Haiti. 

We could not tell all the impressions of our trip, but we 
count it an honor to have been invited to Haiti— one we enjoyed 
and will remember for a long time. Thank you to the Christian 
Witness Mission Board and all that had a part. — L.C. 



OUR FATHER WHICH ART IN HEAVEN 

We all have earthly fathers. We all know who they are and 
what that means. When you speak of your father, you speak of 
someone that is older and more experienced than yourself. 
Fathers are precious to us, and in our circles they are held in 
high regard by then families. They make the ultimate decisions, 
and their word is final. They are told to rule their homes weH 
and to treat their children with love. 

I have been told that the way children view their earthly 
father is quite likely the way they also view their heavenly 
Father. Of course, that can change to a true vision as they draw 
closer to their heavenly Father. But what a responsibility 
fathers have to give their children a clear picture of their 
heavenly Father! 

Fathers are to be the head of the home. They are termed 
the bread winners. 

Daddy can always fix it, and Daddy has a comforting lap. 
Daddy can be stern and fearful, but Daddy still loves. Daddy 
likes to see his children play nicely. Daddy likes to see his 
children get along together. Daddy likes to see his children 
grow up, and Daddy likes to see his children make wise 
decisions.

Well, what do you think? Here we are starting this mighty 
prayer to "Our Father which art in heaven." He is a perfect 
Father. He loves His children infinitely more than an earthly 
father. He loves to see His children fed and clothed. He loves 
to see His children grow. He loves to see His children get 
along together and make wise choices. He is more than 
experienced. He is omniscient, and He does make the wisest 
decisions. His Word is the final word and there will be 
punishment if it is not followed. 

I don't feel that our Father in heaven is looking down in 
stern, foreboding solemnity ready to crack the whip at the 
slightest disobedience. Some may see Him that way. It is 
obvious to me that Jesus did not. He had direct and complete 
access to the Father at all times, and so can we if we are 
covered by the blood of Jesus. Jesus never feared Him, but 
neither did He ever disobey Him. We can be so thankful for the 
first few words of the Lord's Prayer because we are tapping into 
the greatest source of love, peace, joy, wisdom, and power. 
We have addressed the Almighty God. Let us fall on our knees 
and worship Him.

THREE HOURS OF DARKNESS 

Eclipses fascinate me. What a marvelous demonstration of 
the perfect order and timing in God's creation! Consider that an 
eclip se happ ens when three heavenly b o dies, which are 
thousands of miles apart, line up. 

Li a lunar eclipse the earth passes between the sun and 
moon causing the moon to be darkened at night. In a solar 
eclipse the moon passes between the sun and the earth causing 
the earth to be darkened in the daytime. A few places on earth

may be completely shadowed for a few hours depending where 
they are located. 

Jesus was crucified at the third hour. From the third hour to 
the sixth hour His tormenters taunted Him. The rulers derided 
Him saying, "He saved others, let Him save Himself, if He be 
Christ, the chosen of God." They sat down and watched Him 
The soldiers mocked Him. They that passed by reviled Him, 
wagging their heads, taunting Him to come down from the 
cross if He could. The thieves also railed on Him, but one 
repented and asked Jesus to remember him. Jesus, even in His 
great suffering, assured him of Paradise that very day. 

From the sixth hour there was a darkness over all the earth 
until the ninth hour. There is no mention of a storm or dark 
cloud— only darkness. This was more than an eclipse. 

One hymnwriter put it this was: 

. . And the sun refused to shine 
When His Majesty divine 
Was insulted, derided, and slain. 

Did the darkness cause the scoffers to lose their bravado? 
Other signs from heaven that caused great fear were the temple 
veil rending from top to bottom, an earthquake, the rocks 
rending, and graves opened. Matthew 27:54: "Now when the 
centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the 
earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared 
greatly, saying, Truly this was the Spn of God." Luke 23:48: 
"And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding 
the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned." 

We know God was still in control even through these dark 
hours in history, as Jesus aligned Himself with God's perfect 
will, offering Himself as the Passover Lamb. Let us also be in 
God's will and timing even as the sun, moon, and other heavenly 
bodies are. Let us seek to do God's will so He can use us in

The Goshen congregation of Old Brethren held an election 
for minister and deacon on March 26, 2005. Brother Shane 
Oberholtzer and Brother Timothy Yoder were chosen for 
ministers, and Brother Jeff Golding for deacon. They agreed to 
serve in the offices they were chosen for. Their wives, Sister 
Beth Ann Oberholtzer, Sister Serena Yoder, and Sister Deanna 
Golding promised to support their husbands in their new duties. 

On May 7, 2005, the California congregation held an 
election for a deacon. Brother Eddie Wagner was chosen and 
agreed to serve. His wife Deanna promised to support him in 
his new duties.

MY HEART REVEALED 

Is the way we dress ourselves an outward tiling alone 

That should not bring concern to us as Christ we claim to own? 

Do we shrug it off and say, when criticism comes, 

"The inside is what matters when all is said and done." 

How true it is that what's inside is what will really count. 
And true it is that what's inside eventually comes out. 
So let me now focus in truth on what my heart should be 
That outside things may tell Christ has my heart from sin set 
free. 

Is my heart an humble one, a heart that's hid in Christ? 
That seeks a spirit quiet, meek, that's in His sight high priced? 
That doesn't seek approval in the eyes of worldly man, 
With changes to wear, or styled hair, or jewels rich to him 

Is my heart obedient? In the Scriptures it is clear 

That women in submission recognize God's order here. 

A covering for my hair is the symbol I should use 

To show my "head" is man and God. This should I want to do. 

And modesty is also taught, for when man fell in sin, 
A covering for his nakedness is what God made for him. 
Modesty that doesn't call, by boldness, cost or lack, 
Attention to myself, but God. This is a pure heart's act. 

A heart not careless I should have, relating to folks here, 
That is revealed as neat and clean to others I appear. 
To dress respectful when I come to worship God with men, 
A reverent heart desires this, for God is great to him.

Do I have a "pilgrim" heart? or do I choose to blend 
With changing, worldly fashion that pleases eyes of men? 
Or do I seek to unify with brethren on The Way, 
That seeking ones can recognize my purpose clear as day? 

Do I have a true heart? It's possible to do, 
To cover up a heart not right with clothing like the true. 
There's so much more than clothes I wear that tehs what's in my 
The way I act, the way I talk, reveal another part. heart. 

The things I like to read and hear, the things I like to see; 
Oh, may each outward thing reveal my heart is pure and free. 
And that it is an honest heart, a heart that's humble, meek, 
A heart that's hid with Christ in God, His pleasure always seek!

FOR YOUTH 

Faith. . . Shining Bright 

The first memorable thing that happened in my life came 
about when I was just a young boy. I was an only child. My 
father was a godly man who taught me well. I knew he always 
trusted and obeyed God, no matter what the circumstances. 
One morning my father woke me early and gently told me that 
we were going to take a trip. That exciting news drove all 
sleepiness from me. My father helped me pack what clothes he 
thought I'd need while my mother prepared food. 

When we were ready to go, my mother did not join my 
father, myself and the servants who were accompanying us. 
She lovingly kissed me goodbye with tears in her eyes. I looked 
at her questioningly, but all she said was, "Have a safe trip, 
Son." 

"Don't worry, Mother. God will take care of us," I told her 
confidently.

"Aye, Son, that He will," my mother agreed soberly. My 
father's firm, kind hands set me on my donkey, and we left my 
mother waving in the doorway. 

I considered the morning's events as we rode along. My 
father was unusually silent. Once I asked him why my mother 
had not come. 

"Just you and I will take this trip." he answered. 

"But where are we going?" I wondered next. 

"Where God leads, Isaac." He appeared to be deep in 
thought, and I, too, fell silent. Something was strange about 
this trip. My parents acted strangely. Not harsh or unkind, but 
rather, loving, tender, and affectionate. My mother's goodbye 
lingered in my mind. 

For three days we rode, stopping for meals and for sleep. 
We slept under the stars, my father and I on one blanket and the 
two servants on the other. 

Before we went to sleep, my father talked to me of God- 
how great and loving and good He is. As long as I could 
remember, my father had told me stories at bedtime. He told 
me the creation story and the one about a great flood that once 
covered the whole earth. He told me about the ark and the 
rainbow promise. But on this trip he did not tell stories about 
long ago. He told me about himself He told me about God's 
promises to him, to give him land, and to give li im a son who 
would be the father of a great nation. I listened closely to all he 
said. 

The second night he told me of God's promises to be with 
him. "Whenever God tells you to do something, you must 
obey. Sometimes it's hard, but He knows best, Son. He always 
knows best." 

My father's voice shook a little as he finished, and I looked 
at him seriously. "Is it hard, Father, to always obey God?"

"Sometimes He asks us to do things we don't like to do, 
Isaac," he answered softly. "Then we must trust Him to know 
what's good for us." 

The next morning my father told the young men to stay 
there while we continued on to worship God alone. My father 
seemed to be lost in thought again, yet he did not appear to be 
troubled. 

"Father," I said suddenly. 

"Yes, Son." 

"Here is the wood, and you have the fire, but where is the 
lamb for an offering?" 

"God will provide a lamb, my son. " 

As soon as we reached the top of the mountain, my father 
began to build the altar. I usually would have helped Him, but I 
stared in confusion as he placed the wood in order. My father 
did not cry easily, yet his voice had sounded strangely close to 
tears. He turned to look at me, and I saw there were tears in 
his eyes. 

"My son," he said gently, almost reverently. "My son, 
remember I told you God promised me a son?" He also said 
you are the son. He said you will be the father of a great 
nation. God spoke to me again, and He told me to take you, 
my only son, and, even though I love you so much, to sacrifice 
you as an offering for Him. Isaac, we don't understand why, 
but we know we must obey when God speaks. He promised 
you to be a father. I don't know His plans, but I know he can 
even raise you from the dead if He wants to." 

There was a long silence. I stared numbly at the ground and 
felt my father place his loving hand on my shoulder. Many 
thoughts raced, tumbling, through my mind. 

"Isaac?" I looked up to meet my father's eyes. 

"It's all right, Father," I answered, and the calmness of my 
voice surprised me. The next thing I knew, I was crushed 
against my father's shoulder.

It was a quick embrace. He released me and prepared to 
bind me. I did not struggle. I felt no terror. Perhaps I was in 
shock, but I had always trusted my father, and it did not enter 
my mind not to do so now. He placed me on the altar, and I 
thought, "This is the last. In a moment I will see the God my 
father loves so much." 

His hand was raised. The knife was above my neck. 
Suddenly a voice called urgently, "Abraham! Abraham!" 

"Here I am." 

"Lay not your hand on the lad. Don't do anything to him. I 
know, now, you fear God, seeing you withheld not your son, 
your only son, from me." 

A ram, caught in the nearby bushes provided a suitable 
offering instead. We offered it with a prayer of thanksgiving, 
and my father named the place Jehovah-jireh~in the mount of 
the Lord it shall be seen. 

"It's like you said, Father," I told him. "God provided the 
lamb." 

"His way is best, isn't it, Son? You were dead to me for 
three days, but God raised you up." My father's face was 
peaceful and content. 

The trip down the mountain was joyful. My father 
continued to praise God for His goodness, and I was 
determining, young as I was, that my father's faith was what I 
wanted. His faith in God was strong and true, like a light 
shining through the rough days behind. I knew I wanted to be a 
man like him who trusted God. 

"By faith Abraham. . . offered up his only begotten son. . . 
accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the 
dead." (Hebrews 11:17,19)

CHILDREN'S PAGE 
Dan Gets Revenge 

Dan was very sad. Last week the neighbor children had 
stolen his baseball and called him bad names. Yesterday they 
had made him have a bicycle wreck. Today they had thrown 
branches and stones at him while he was picking berries in the 
woods. And all because his daddy said something to their 
daddy about Jesus that their daddy did not believe. 

Dan and the neighbor children used to play together. Dan ! s 
daddy had given the neighbor children permission to play in 
their woods, and they and Dan had built a treehouse together. 
Now they said it was theirs, and Dan could not play in it. 

Well, he wouldn't play in it, but they had not said he had to 
stay out, and he wouldn't! Dan was going to get revenge! The 
neighbors were gone and would not see him do it. 

Quickly Dan gathered a big bucket full of things and carried 
it to the treehouse. Then what a banging and sawing was heard 
in the treehouse! Even when it was quiet, it wasn't because Dan 
was not busy. When Dan finally left, that treehouse was quite 
changed. 

When the neighbor children got home, they could see the 
treehouse had been changed, and it made them even more 
angry. "We said that treehouse was ours!" they yelled. "Now 
stay out of it! Don't think you can keep us from playing in it! " 

Dan just smiled. "Play in it all you want to," he said. 

That make them suspicious. They would not go near the 
treehouse for a few days, and Dan began to worry that his plan 
would not work. 

Then one day, Dan knew they had been in the treehouse, for 
they were acting differently. At first they just wouldn't look at 
him. They tried to avoid him. Then they started to give little 
smiles when he said, "Hi," and finally they asked him to come 



and play in the treehouse with them, and Dan was happy to do 
so. 

You see, the things he did to that treehouse were good 
things, not bad things. He had replaced a couple broken steps, 
built a table and chairs, made the new window the boy had 
wanted, hung the mirror the girl had wanted, painted the 
outside of the treehouse, and left gifts on the table for both of 
them. For the boy, Dan left his old baseball glove which was 
too small for him, but still fit the boy perfectly. For the girl he 
left a coloring book. It was a new one. Dan had colored only 
one picture, and he was able to tear it out so it did not even 
show that a page was missing. And he left a note saying he 
wanted them to keep the baseball, too. 

Thus Dan got his revenge, and what a good revenge it was, 
don f t you think?

PRIMARY CONCERN 

Our lives through various scenes are drawn 
And vexed with trifling cares, 
While Thine eternal thought moves on; 
Thine undisturbed affairs. 

One recurring statement we hear and think is, "We are so 
blest." And the inevitable realization follows: "We are so 
responsible." In the various scenes through which our lives are 
drawn, we are too often "vexed with trifling cares." But what is 
really important in these scenes? What really counts? Is it not 
how our responses harmonize with God's "eternal thought" and 
"undisturbed affairs," in short, His will? 

We read that it is not His will that any perish; it is His will 
that all be saved. To this end God sent His Son to suffer and 
die. To this end God has directed His people to preach the 
Word and to teach and baptize all nations. Jesus left these 
instructions with His followers, and they were faithful to follow 
them in their generation. (See Col. 1:23) Committed teachers 
have followed and brought the Gospel of Christ even down to 
us so far from Jerusalem where it began and so far removed in 
time. 

Comparing to other countries, we have been favored with 
more that just material benefits. The Gospel invitation has been 
committed to us to share. We have priceless examples of 
diligence, of efficient organization, of industrious obedience. 
Many in underprivileged countries have none of these. We are 
truly responsible. 

Wait though, we have these treasures in earthen vessels. Of 
ourselves we are easily damaged, discouraged, defeated. But 
we also have a mighty Lord who promises, "Greater is he that is

in you than he that is in the world." With Paul we can say, "I 
can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthened me." 

Sometimes it seems that we are not so successful— that we 
are always on the defensive. "Why do you do that?" "Why do 
you dress that way?" "How is your church different?" Without 
being proud or aggressive, we need to boldly meet the foe each 
day. So much is at stake! Our own words and thoughts are 
one battle ground. Another is the testimony we give—in 
business or just on the street or in our families. And remember 
our responsibility to Jesus' commission to spread the good news 
of God f s saving grace. Jesus' words to the leper show His will 
to all in sin: "I will, be thou clean." 

Is this not our main concern? There are so many trifling 
cares, but they must not keep us from our primary duty. Even 
in our country where a Bible cost only a dollar, men are going 
on the broad way to destruction. Oh that we might put up a 
road block on that broad road! Warning signs on our highways 
shout of danger ahead when a bridge is out or a wreck blocks 
the way. Warnings of spiritual pitfalls are multiple times more 
needed because of eternal destinies— everlasting life or eternal 
death. 

The zeal of Charles Spurgeon is apparent in these words of 
his: "If sinners will be damned, at least let them leap into hell 
over our bodies. And if they will perish, let them perish with 
our arms about their knees, imploring them to stay. If hell must 
be filled, at least let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and 
let not one go there unwarned and unprayed for." 

We have been too often and too long diverted into lesser 
concerns. Satan uses our differences, our disagreements, our 
divisions to his advantage. It is time to unite in our efforts to 
spread the Gospel of salvation. Sure, we have tried to do this in 
the past. But where is most of our effort spent? How often do 
we give up our plans to help a struggling one? How many 
trifling cares vex us and how many are the various scenes

through which we are drawn? I confess my need for more 
diligence. 

We have only a tiny corner of influence. We cannot convert 
the world. But we can brighten our corner by the Spirit of God. 
We can support those who have a greater area of influence. We 
were privileged to see the impressive operation and warehouse 
of Christian Aid Ministries at Ephrata, Pennsylvania. Fifty-five 
volunteers from four chinches were packing food parcels for 
Haiti that day. Also nearby is Grace Press sending out Christian 
literature to Russia. As Aaron and Hur held up the arms of 
Moses until the battle was won, we can support honest efforts 
of those who are effective in relief and the spread of the Gospel. 

We cannot afford to attempt projects to spread the Word 
while neglecting our duties at home to conform our own lives 
to God's will. Only those who have been delivered can help 
those who need deliverance. Our children and young people 
under our influence deseive our priority too. May God direct 
our efforts in His "eternal thought" and purpose. -- L.C. 



HALLOWED BE THY NAME 

The dictionary says "hallow" means "to make or set apart as 
holy; sanctify, consecrate." 

We have addressed our Father in heaven.- Now we are 
calling Him holy. This brings a beautiful picture in my mind of 
how His name is hallowed in heaven. Revelation 4 describes 
the very throne of God, our Father. The eighth verse says, 
"And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him and 
they were full of eyes within and they rest not day and night, 
saying, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty which was, and 
is, and is to come." The following verses tell of the twenty-four 
elders falling down before Him, worshipping Him and casting 
then crowns before His throne. Verse 11 ends the chapter with,

"Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and 
power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure 
they are and were created." 

To search the depths of the holiness of God is a lifetime 
work. He is incomprehensibly holy. "At His name our hearts 
do leap." He is Lord of all. Human minds cannot express His 
complete holiness. Only God, the One we are worshipping, can 
give us the ability to set Him apart in our lives. 

He is worthy of our worship and praise. As we pray to 
Him, we are drawn to think of Him in His holiness. Think of 
His divine power and authority. Think about His majestic 
throne and the way He rules the earth and sky. Think back 
through the years and see His master plan in each life. Think of 
the future and how we shall see Him in all His splendor. 
Beloved, our minds cannot fathom the depth and height and 
breadth of the Father's Holiness. 

A picture comes to my mind of one way we hallow His 
name here on earth. In my mind's eye I see all my dear brethren 
and sisters sitting around the communion table. The closing 
prayer has been prayed and announcements for future meetings 
have been stated. I think we all know the feeling of true joy as 
we unite our voices in song to end that sacred meeting. Our 
hearts are fiill of praise and zeal to live our lives in complete 
worship to our Holy God. 

Our hearts reach out to a Holy God. We as mortals know 
how unholy we are without the blood of Jesus cleansing us from 
sin. God sees our weak endeavors to worship Him, and I 
believe He is satisfied when we come to Him in brokenness to 
hallow His name.

WHAT OUR APPEARANCE CONVEYS 

We were sitting in Dairy Queen on a quiet, dusky Sunday 
evening. We were about ready to leave when this young man 
walked over to our table carrying a box. He identified himself 
as a Christian trying to raise funds for a mission. Li his box 
were some trinkets to buy. He was from upstate New York. 
His talk was very slangy with a lot of "hey man, that's cool" 
comments from our answers to his questions. His questions 
were typical: "Are you Amish?" and I related an abbreviated 
explanation of some differences and similarities. "That's cool!" 

But then he made a statement that really caught our 
attention and caused us to soberly consider our dress. "I see by 
the way you dress that you f re humble folks." My mind went to 
I Peter 5:5 that states ". . .and be clothed with humility: for 
God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble." This 
is speaking of being "subject one to another," and "submit 
yourselves unto the elder." Accountability and submission 
require the grace of humbleness and will be reflected in every 
aspect of our lives including our appearance in clothing. 

What are we trying to convey with our clothing? Our 
standard of dress is recognized as Christian dress. Many times 
in public places we have received a "God bless you" from a 
passer-by. Fashionable dress conveys an extremely different 
message. 

I don't know what this young man will do with the 
impression that he had of us. I hope it will enrich his life and 
bring him closer to the Lord. Let us remember that our bodies 
are the temple of the Holy Spirit and that we are to glorify God 
in our bodies and in our spirits. (I Cor. 6: 19,20)

HE LISTENED 

"I was sitting, torn by grief. Someone came and talked to 
me of God's dealings, of why it happened, of hope beyond the 
grave. He talked constantly; he said things I knew were true. I 
was unmoved except to wish he'd go away. He finally did. . 

"Another came and sat beside me. He just sat beside me for 
an hour and more, listened when I said something, answered 
briefly, prayed simply, left. I was moved. I was comforted. I

What kind of comforter are we? Are we the kind they wish 
would go away or the kind they hated to see you leave. II Cor. 
1:3,4: "Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus 
Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who 
comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to 
comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort 
wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God."

CHRISTIAN WITNESS IN BUSINESS DECISIONS 
(Lk. 12:16-20, Mt. 5: 13- 15) 

As we think of Christians in business, perhaps the one 
imperative to keep focused in our lives is that as Christians we 
are called to be the salt of the earth, the light of the world, and 
ambassadors for Christ. As ambassadors, we are called to put 
the Kingdom of God in the best and most favorable light to the 
lost and ruined world around us.

A second perspective is that we are stewards of God. We 
are caretakers of all that God has entrusted to us. Our very 
lives, our homes, our money, our businesses are not ours but in 
reality belong to God. We are just taking care of these things 
for His Kingdom. Once we realize this, our perspective of how 
we deal with them changes. These things are not mine to do 
with as I see fit, but these are God's and I will need to give Him 
an account of how I used them some day. 

Business decisions not only have earthly, but nearly as 
often, eternal consequences. Here on earth a man is known by 
the decisions he makes, and he develops a reputation which is 
either good or bad. As a Christian, our reputation has a direct 
bearing or reflection of the Kingdom of God. 

The decisions we make have a tremendous influence on our 
Christian witness and testimony to the world. Far too often we 
become self-focused in business forgetting we are stewards and 
ambassadors of God, and our business dealings begin to reflect 
an element of selfishness and greed. As people see this, our 
Christian testimony and ambassadorship become tarnished or 
even destroyed. Instead of being an asset in God's Kingdom, 
we have become a liability, marring the glorious name of our 
God and even casting it into the dirt, so to speak. Far too 
often, the opportunities God has given us to be a witness and 
testimony have been destroyed by personal greed and 
selfishness. 

Whether as an employer or employee, many of the items I 
present here apply equally in our fives. As an employer, your 
decisions affect your employees, customers, suppliers, banker, 
and perhaps many other individuals. As an employee, your 
decisions affect your employer, fellow employees as well as 
many of the same individuals mentioned for the employer. 

I personally feel that the opportunity to provide a Christian 
witness to the unsaved in our business decisions and dealings is

tremendous. Not only that, it probably will have the most 
impact in their lives if it stands out as a good or a negative 
experience. Far too often we compartmentalize life. Sunday 
and Wednesday eve are God's time, and the rest of the week is 
ours. We forget that we are ambassadors and representatives of 
God's Kingdom every day of the week and every hour of the 
day. Here perhaps is our mission and opportunity to lead 
someone to the Lord. Here we have been placed as a witness 
to our employer, fellow employees, suppliers, or customers. 

How we conduct our business will have a tremendous 
impact on the lost. When I represent the old family clunker to a 
prospective buyer as an excellent car without fault, knowing 
there are some major problems, I have done a disservice to 
God, I have been deceitful and dishonest, and I have in essence 
blasphemed the Holy Name of God. 

We deplore the slave auctions of years ago, where a man, 
woman, or child was auctioned off to the highest bidder. Yet 
Satan is operating a similar slave auction bidding for our souls. 
What is the price for which we are willing to sell our soul? 
Sometimes it is just a matter of cents or some other small 
amount of ill-gotten gain. 
In business decisions we need to keep an eternal viewpoint 

In our text the rich man had a very self-focused viewpoint. 
He was looking out for his retirement. He did not recognize 
God as blessing his labors, but he took full credit for all of it 
himself-My hard work! He had an abundance with which he 
could easily share with others, yet all he could see was self. He 
was in essence robbing God of the things which belonged to 
Him, similar to the young child hanging on to his toys loudly 
proclaiming mine! mine! mine! 

Col. 3:17 and 23 instruct us that in what ever we do, we 
are to do it to the glory of God. When we focus our lives on 
being about the Kingdom of God and doing our Father's will, 
the perspective in which we live our lives is profoundly

changed. We need to keep this perspective in focus as we are 
indeed to be about our Father's will. 

Some time ago I talked to a Beachy Amish farmer, and he 
told of his business dealings with a neighbor. The neighbor had 
a reputation of shady business practices. One day in the spring, 
he came to the Beachy farmer and asked him to help plow his 
field, as it had been too wet to get the crops in, and it was 
calling for more rain. Feeling the need to be in his own fields, 
he reluctantly consented to help this man for an agreed price. 
But unfortunately payment never arrived. Later in the summer, 
the neighbor asked for some help to put up the hay, and again 
the payment never arrived. The third time he asked for help at a 
very inconvenient time, but payment this time was a cal£ but 
when the calf arrived, it was very sick and died shortly. The 
following year he again was asked to help put up hay. This time 
the Beachy Amish farmer asked if he could purchase the hay, 
which the neighbor agreed to. After the hay was put in the 
bain, he went to the neighbor four times asking what the price 
was. Finally the neighbor told him to keep it for the help he had 
provided in the past. 

But more importantly, one of his children happened to be in 
town and heard the neighbor talking about this Beachy Amish 
man. He praised him for being a great neighbor, and later he 
actually became a believer. 

What if the farmer had protested and harassed this man for 
payment or kept constantly reminding him of the past? Did it 
ever occur to us that God might have in mind for us to lose 
some of His possessions in a "raw deal" to invest in the life of 
an unbeliever that he might see Christ in us? When we look at 
these possessions as being ours, we often become offended and 
angry, but when we see them as God's and His allowing it, it 
may well become a testimony which changes the life of an

OBITUARY 
DORIS FAY MOORE was born September 15, 1946, in 
Modesto, California, daughter of Alexander and Lois (Cover) 
Shirk. She grew up in Modesto, attending Modesto schools, 
Modesto Junior College, and University of California, Davis. 

On October 7, 1967, she was married to Kenneth A. Moore, 
son of Edward and Mildred Moore. To this union were born 
three children. 

Doris loved the Lord all her life. On July 19, 1970, she was 
baptized and became a member of the Old German Baptist 
Church, At the time of her passing, she was a member of the 
United Methodist Church of Hughson. 

In 1971, the family moved to Hughson. She stayed home 
with her three children until they were in school and then 
studied at California State University, Stanislaus, where she 
received her teaching credentials and Masters in Curriculum and. 
Instruction. She loved being a teacher and taught fourth grade 
at Hughson Elementary School for sixteen years. She was also 
a part-time instructor at CSU Stanislaus for seven years. 

After a battle with cancer, Doris passed away at the family 
home in Hughson on May 23, 2005, at the age of 58 years, 8 
months, and 8 days. 

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Moore; three 
children, Robert Anthony Moore, Brenda Marie Vaca, and 
Barbara Michelle Abeloe; one brother, Glen W. Shirk; two 
sisters, Dorothy Mae Moore and Mary Ann Fassler; seven 
grandchildren; her mother-in-law, Mildred Garber; nieces and 
nephews, and many relatives and friends. 

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents and a 
step-father, Daniel W. Mohler. 

The funeral was held on May 28, 2005, at the First United 
Methodist Church in Turlock, with burial in the Wood Colony 
Cemetery.

A Lesson from "Peter Pecker" 

Do you like watching birds? Jesus knew the birds well. 

[lead Matthew 6:25-34. This makes it sound like birds do not 

vdrry about where their next meal comes from. They are just 

lappy with what they have now. Is that really true? 

My bird Petie answered that question the other day. He 
was singing while I worked quietly nearby. After a while, I 
realized he was not singing any more. He was just pecking at 
his cage roof Peck-peck-peck. Peck-peck-peck-peck-peck. It 
was becoming annoying. 

I decided maybe there was something wrong. Sure enough, 
he was out of food and hungry! I intended to clean his cage as 
soon as I was done with my other project, so I did not give him 
much, just three bites. He ate them quickly and looked for 
more. 

Finding none, he flew up to his perch, and I expected him to 
start pecking again. Three bites would not hold him long. But 
instead, he sang. He was still happy when I cleaned his cage a 
little while later. Why be concerned about it when he was not 
hungry? 

So Jesus was right. He always is right! If teachers or 
scientists or even preachers tell you otherwise, do not believe 
them! God is much wiser than they are, and He knows what He 
is talking about. He is trust-worthy, and that is whv we oh w

AFFLUENCE 

If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous 
mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches. 

-Luke 16:11 

The work had stopped. Artaxerxes had been persuaded that 
building the temple would be a dangerous detriment to his 
kingdom. He had sent an order to "cease the work of the house 
of God which is at Jerusalem " 

Haggai prophesied at this time. "Is it time for you, O ye, to 
dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste? Now 
therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts; Consider your ways. . . 
Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; 
and I will take pleasure in it and I will be glorified, saith the 
Lord." The people listened and continued the work. 

There is a building project going on today~the most 
extensive of all time. It is the building of the Church of the 
Lord Jesus, about which He said, "The gates of hell shall not 
prevail against it." We have a choice to answer the call of the 
Lord Jesus and be part of this project. We have the choice of 
how much to be involved. 

I recently asked a couple brethren what they thought was 
the greatest problem in the church today. One said, "Money." 
The other said, "Affluence." I agree. It would apply, not to the 
poor countries, but to our own. We have been given what the 
world is striving for. It comes with responsibility for its use. It 
can come with an attitude of independence which makes the 
problem in the church. 

There is a way to be "faith&l in the unrighteous mammon." 
I Timothy 6:17,18: "Charge them that are rich in this world, 
that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in

the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; That 
they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to 
distribute, willing to communicate." But the building materials 
for the church are more than dollars. Haggai said, "Go up to 
the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house." 

It is expensive to build and it takes skill to use the materials 
of love, patience, kindness, cheerfulness. Paul calls the good 
material gold, silver, precious stones which will stand fire. 
Haggai 2:8: "The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the 
Lord of hosts. The glory of this latter house shall be greater 
than of the former, saith the Lord of hosts: and in this place 
will I give peace, saith the Lord of hosts." Solomon f s temple 
was far more splendid, but in this house— the one built in 
Haggai's time and remodeled by Herod—Jesus came and 
proclaimed the gospel of peace. 

The temple going up today is one built without hands. No 
human contractor is in charge. God calls us to help like in 
Haggai's time: "They came and did work in the house of the 
Lord of hosts, their God." (1:14) 

Today we are "dwelling in cieled houses." One of the first 
concerns when we marry is "Where will we live?" We often 
plan a new building or a remodel of an older one. This is not 
wrong. We are to provide for our own. But God calls us to 
seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Jesus 
said, "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth. . . But lay 
up for yourselves treasures in heaven. . . For where your 
treasure is, there will your heart be also." 

We have only one life here. We cannot afford to place our 
affections on the wrong values. We must not waste our time 
with earthly goals. I am not writing to judge. Each one must 
be led to evaluate his own motives. Where is our treasure, our 
affection, our heart? We are so attracted to cars and houses 
and furnishings. Our minds easily justify our decisions.

If affluence is really the greatest problem in the church, we 
need to do something about it. Money is in demand. We don't 
have to spend it on ourselves. There are many needs in the 
world. Poor countries cry out for help. There are many poor in 
our own affluent country. May God give us judgment to use 
the good things He gives in a way that will promote the building 
of His kingdom on earth. --L.C. 



NONCOMFORMITY 

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed 
by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that 
good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:2) 

What is nonconformity? Is it a doctrine that we pull out of 
the closet and dust off when we are asked why we don't have 
television or frequent various entertainments that other 
Christians do? As a young believer, I remember dreading 
questions about why I did not vote or why the Brethren dressed 
differently. I was afraid of what others would think about me. 
Not being as strong in my faith as I should have been, I feared 
the opinions of men more than I reverenced God. Many of us 
can relate to situations where we have been ashamed to own 
Jesus Christ before others. The doctrine of Biblical 
nonconformity can be a powerful tool to keep us from being 
ashamed of Jesus and help us give a testimony to others of His 
saving grace. 

The word nonconformity can be misleading if it is 
misunderstood. Taken by itself, it implies that the focus of the 
doctrine is just to be "not conformed" to the world. But to just 
be "not conformed" to the world around us will result in a 
frustrating exercise in which our lives are governed by a 
constantly changing list of things we don't do and places we 
don't go, A positive, Biblical principle must guide our thoughts,

desires, and actions in every encounter we have with the world. 
Biblical nonconformity is being conformed to Jesus Christ in 
every area of life. Considering Romans 12:2 quoted above, we 
could call it the doctrine of transformation. Whatever words 
we use, there is far more to the doctrine of Biblical 
nonconformity than a list of places we don't frequent and 
activities from which we abstain. 

Everything in our lives either draws us closer to Jesus Christ 
or takes us farther away from Him. The Gospel challenges us 
to give up those things that do not bring us closer to Christ. 
But just giving up things such as money, possessions, fashion, 
or entertainment is only a small part of what nonconformity 
entails. James says, "But every man is tempted, when he is 
drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath 
conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, 
bringeth forth death. 11 (James 1:14-15) It is not money, 
possessions, fashionable clothing, or entertainment that causes 
us to sin. It is our unrighteous desire for these objects that 
James says draws us away and entices us to sin. We must never 
let ourselves think that simply abstaining from the objects of the 
world is enough. The real problem is our lust that makes us 
crave what we ought to abhor. 

The Gospel of Jesus Christ strikes at the heart of what 
nonconformity means. It is not enough to abstain from 
adultery; we must not even lust in our hearts. .'It is not enough 
to refrain from murder; we must not even hate our brother. 
From an eternal perspective, it does no good to abstain from 
physical sin if we allow the lust that leads to the sin to remain in 
our hearts. Hating our brother will keep us from heaven just as 
effectively as the act of murder. Lust will condemn us before 
God just as surely as living in immorality. From the perspective 
of eternity, there is little difference between lust or hatred and 
physical sin. It is obvious that there are far greater 
consequences in this life for the murderer or the profligate than

for the man who only harbors hatred or lust in his heart. These 
consequences are a warning to those tempted to commit such 
acts. But the goal of Biblical nonconformity is a heart yielded 
to God in every thought, desire, and action. 

Biblical nonconformity is a doctrine of the heart. In 
Proverbs 4:23 Solomon says, "Keep thy heart with all diligence; 
for out of it are the issues of life." The Gospel challenges us to 
be conformed to Jesus Christ in every thought, desire, and 
action. No amount of human zeal, self-discipline, or positive 
thinking will accomplish this in our lives. Our carnal nature 
must die and be replaced with the nature of Christ living within 
us. Praise God that He provides a way for this to happen! Paul 
expresses it this way: "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless 
I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I 
now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who 
loved me, and gave himself for me." (Gal. 2:20) 

Unrighteous desire does not come from the nature of Christ. 
Thus when we have an unrighteous desire, it is an indication of 
a part of our heart that is not yielded to Jesus Christ. The Holy 
Spirit will not usurp control over a part of our lives that we do 
not willingly yield to Him. Every temptation is an opportunity 
to yield to Jesus Christ in that part of our life. There is no 
better time to yield to Christ than when we are tempted. To 
yield our wills to Christ in the midst of temptation and allow 
Him to fight the battle is to defeat the enemy. James tells us, 
"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he 
will flee from you." (James 4:7) Resisting the devil is 
accomplished through submission to God, not through the 
strength of our own will. 

Sometimes we get comfortable with our unrighteous 
desires. There is gratification in lust that our carnal nature does 
not want to give up. But if we are ever to have victory and 
freedom in our Christian lives, we must walk away from those 
desires and never look back. Those of us who have been

baptized into Christ have made a covenant to "renounce Satan 
and all his pernicious ways and the sinful pleasures of this 
world. ,f Well, now is the time to make good on that covenant. 
Turn away from your unrighteous desire in repentance; yield 
your will to God and He will bless you for it. 

The goal of Biblical nonconformity is not to merely abstain 
from sinning, but to not desire to sin in the first place. Paul tells 
us in Galatians, "Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the 
lust of the flesh." (Gal. 5:16) Too many times in my life I have 
tried to live in the Spirit while walking in the flesh. Trying to 
live a Christian life while in the grip of unrighteous desire is a 
terrible bondage. Jesus died so that we can be free from the 
bondage of lust. He wants us to be dead to sin-to find liberty 
and victory in Him. (to be continued)

THE LORD'S PRAYER 

"Thy Kingdom Come" 

Let Thy kingdom, blessed Savior 
Come and bid our jarrings cease; 
Come, oh come and reign forever, 
God of love and Prince of peace. 
Once more we unite our voices in song as we lift up this 
plea to God. We have sung this song often of late, and I think 
it is fitting. It is what we all truly desire-that His kingdom 
would come. And when His kingdom comes, of course our 
jarrings will cease. 

This phrase is the first petition to God in our Lord's prayer. 
We have acknowledged who He is-our Father in heaven-and 
we have worshipped Him. This order is by design. We now 
have access to the throne and can lay out our petitions. We can

see what was on our Lord's mind first and foremost. Our daily 
needs are mentioned later, but Christ saw this as most 
important. 

I think this phrase could be taken two different ways. It is 
the ultimate desire of every Christian to see the clouds be rolled 
back and the King return to earth to set up a kingdom with all 
His chosen, but I also see, as in the song quoted above, that 
believers desire God's kingdom among them now. The second 
verse of that hymn starts: 

Come, good Lord, with courage arm us; 
Persecution rages here; 
Nothing, Lord, we know can harm us 
While our Shepherd is so near. 

We hear a lot about the kingdom. Many Scriptures talk of 
God's kingdom. Hebrews 1:8 calls it a righteous kingdom. 
"But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and 
ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. " 
Hebrews 11:13-16 contrasts strangers and pilgrims with a 
country "that is an heavenly," and God calls His kingdom "a 
city" in verse 16. In St. John 18:36, "Jesus answered, My 
kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this 
world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be 
delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. " 

This kingdom is also one of truth and love. It will expose 
deception and expel hate. It will transform the lives of those 
who join its ranks. It will permeate every aspect of life and 
death. It is an eternal kingdom. It gives hope beyond the 
grave. 

Spiritually there are only two kingdoms in this world: the 
kingdom of light and the kingdom of darkness. Ever since there 
were two kingdoms, there has been war. Brethren and sisters, 
when we pray, "Thy kingdom come," it sets off alarms in the 
kingdom of darkness. When we, as mortal creatures, boldly

appeal for our Father in heaven to come, it makes Satan 
tremble. 

The war is real. The war is on. Satan, as ruler of the 
kingdom of darkness, is coming at us from all directions. Do 
not be discouraged; fight on! As we humbly ask the King to 
intervene, we can have peace and calm The more earnestly and 
sincerely we desire His kingdom to come, individually and 
collectively, the more we will see the mighty power of the 
everlasting kingdom. We take joy in the battle when the King 
reigns in our lives on a daily basis. At the same time we 
anticipate the return of the King in His splendor to set up His 
kingdom here on earth. "Even so come, Lord Jesus."

CHRISTIAN WITNESS IN BUSINESS DECISIONS 

(Lk. 12:16-20, Mt. 5:13-15)

In business decisions we need to seek the counsel of God. 

My mind goes to Joshua 9 when the Gibbeonites came to 
Joshua clothed in rags and carrying old wine bottles and moldy 
bread claiming to live far away. But what looked like an easy 
decision to Joshua turned out to be a sham and they were taken 
in because they failed to seek the counsel of God. (Joshua 9: 14) 

We are easily deceived and taken in by cunning and vile 
men. We need to seek God's will in the decisions of our lives, 
and sometimes what may make lousy business sense to us, may 
be what God wants us to do to invest in the work of His 
kingdom. Unless we seek God's leading and direction, we can 
easily find ourselves trapped in a business deal which tarnishes 
the reputation of both God and us. When our business dealings 
make our Christian testimony become a mockery of God, we

are standing on very dangerous spiritual ground. But better 
than our Christian testimony becoming a mockery to God, 
perhaps we will need to find an honorable way out, and this can 
prove to be very expensive in emotions, time, and money. 
In making business decisions we need to recognize God as 
the rightful owner. 

We could list a number of Scriptures in support of this 
point, but perhaps Psalm 50:9-12, 24:1, Deut. 10:14, and Hag. 
2:8 will suffice for the moment. God tells us that He owns all 
things, the cattle on the hills, the sheep, gold, silver, souls. 

In the parable of the rich fool, we see he felt he was the 
owner of all things. How often do we call ourselves the owner 
of all things when indeed God is the rightful owner. Unless we 
see God as owner, we find greed becoming the motivator of 
many of our decisions. Buy cheap; sell dear—shady and 
questionable transactions and deals—wrong representations of 
quality— promising much but actually delivering little. These 
things not only destroy an effective Christian witness, but 
destroy us spiritually also. In these things we actually become a 
Christian in the past tense, for these are not the attributes of a 
Christian. 

When we recognize God as the owner, and our position as a 
caretaker or steward of all that He has entrusted to us, we 
become more accountable to God. It is no longer ours, and the 
motivations of self and greed are greatly diminished. We view 
our business dealings from God's perspective, and deal honestly 
and uprightly with all men. 

Perhaps one of the greatest freedoms we experience is in 
giving. When we recognize the stewardship responsibilities 
God has given us, we are able to see the needs of others and 
freely give of God's abundant storehouse in the aid of those 
who are in need. In doing this we become a testimony of what 
God has done for us.

In all business decisions, honesty is the RULE. 

m Romans 12:17b tells us "Provide things honest in the sight 
of aU men." God has commanded us to deliver a just weight, 
heaping up, pressing down, and squeezing in more. 

The story is told of a butcher in years gone by. A customer 
came in at the end of the day asking for a plump chicken. The 
owner reached into the barrel and swished the chicken around 
in the water as if he were making a choice. He pulled the one 
and only chicken out of the water and put it on the scale. Upon 
announcing the weight, the customer asked if he had a bigger 
one, and he replied yes. He returned the chicken to the barrel 
and proceeded to swish it around, pulled it back out, and 
weighed it along with a piece of his thumb. After the butcher 
announced its weight, the customer decided he would take both 
chickens. 

If this man were a Christian, what would have happened to 
his testimony and credibility when he could not deliver two 
chickens, and the only chicken he had, had two different 
weights? God calls such things an abomination, and they are 
not to be found among Christian people. 

Business decisions as well as every day choices affect our 
testimony, the reputation of God, and, just as important, the 
destiny of our soul. Many people with Christian convictions 
have walked away from a lucrative deal, feeling if that is the 
way business is done, they want nothing of it, unwilling to 
compromise the cause of Christ. 

In summary, what is the worth of a man's soul? Remember 
our life affects not only our own soul, but the souls of fellow 
men. Have we devalued our life with broken promises, false 
representations, lies, greed, or selfishness? My brother's soul 
may be my responsibility, and I sold it for a few dollars or cents. 

I believe our Christian testimony is more evident in business 
dealings than in the word we say and the daily life we live. Our 
dealings will again and again influence a man's destiny.

Our souls and the souls of those we deal with are on the 
auction block, and what are we willing to sell out for? A few 
dollars or a few cents? I have attended a few auctions, and 
sometimes they will start an item at, say $50.00, and keep 
dropping the price until it finally sells. Other times it goes the 
other way and continues to go up in price. Put your soul on the 
auction block of life. What is it worth? Oh no, I would not go 
cheaply, I say. Yet when the right opportunity comes along, 
perhaps we held out for a higher price, but finally sold out for a 
few cents. Satan is there calling: "Who will give me a dollar, a 
dollar, fifty cents, fifty cents, a quarter, a quarter, a dime, a 
dime. . . sold to the man over there for a dime!" 

What is the value of your soul? It is priceless! It was 
purchased by the Son of God! Don't sell out cheaply! Don't 
sell the souls of those you deal with cheaply. Even if we gained 
this whole world, we still would be selling out cheaply. Let's be 
men and women of integrity in our business dealings, doing all 
things right and above board that God f s kingdom may be 
glorified. A man is known by the choices he makes, either good 
or bad!

What Is Our Purpose? 

IVe been doing some serious thinking lately. A lot of us 
young folks have had some really close calls in the last few 
years. Why are we still here? Why haven't any of these 
accidents ended in tragedy? Why have we" been spared so 
much? Why is our circle still intact when so many other people 
have faced the loss of loved ones in similar accidents? 

What is God's purpose in sparing our lives? Are we 
fulfilling it? Are we grateful enough for the gift of life? What 
are we doing with the strength and energy God has given us? 

I don't have the answers to all these questions, but I think it 
is good for us to consider them and examine our hves. 
It is so easy for us to take life and health, strength, friends,

and family for granted, yet these are not things that we are just 
entitled to, nor do we deserve them for any good in ourselves. 

IVe heard different people say that when someone is spared, 
God still has something for them to do, a purpose for them 
here. I think that is true. I have also heard an older person say 
God keeps us here because He is not finished purifying us and 
conforming us to His image. In other words, we are still here 
because there is something He wants to do— to accomplish— in 
us. 

Are we pliable as He brings about the events and 
experiences of our lives to shape us in His likeness? Are we 
willing to take His yoke and learn of Him, even when it requires 
self-denial and giving up things that are special to us? 

Do we give His will the highest priority and put our wills 
and affections under that? Or do we do His will when it is 
convenient and does not clash with our personal comfort too 
much? 

What do we really value? Comfort? Ease? Wealth? 
Popularity? Acceptance with a "cool" crowd? Or do we value 
the approval of God, His blessing on our efforts, and His smile 
on our choices and actions above all else? 

Those first values are elusive. They tantalize with deceptive 
promises of pleasure. Yet they never quite fill the void within 
the heart, and always leave a person searching for more— a little 
more excitement, money, recognition— a little more— a little 
more. And yet it is never enough, never sufficient to satisfy. 

If we choose to put Christ first and to regulate our activities 
to please Him regardless of our own pleasure, He fills that void 
with Himself, and also pours out abundant blessings we have 
not even thought to ask for. 

There is nothing on earth that can satisfy like a living 
relationship with a loving Saviour. Once a person has tasted the 
sweetness of this fellowship, the old pleasures lose their charm.

Thus far, we have been spared so much. It is easy to think life 
will continue uninterrupted as we have known it. But we have 
no promise of tomorrow. We do not know what one day may 
bring forth. 

If I had been snatched away suddenly, how would my 
record stand? Could it be said of me, "Well done, thou good 
and faith&l servant; enter into the joy of thy Lord"? Or would 
it be said that I was "weighed in the balances and found 
wanting"? 

If I had been snatched away, would the example I had left 
behind be safe for other feet to follow? Would the path my feet 
have taken lead another person closer to God, closer to Home? 

I doubt that I am the only one who sometimes feels quite 
insignificant. We may think, "I am not anyone important. It 
would not make much difference if I were missing." Yet, truly, 
God has designed for each of us to fill a specific place. We are 
here for a reason. If one person does not fill his place, someone 
suffers! 

If any one of our young folks were suddenly snatched away 
in death, it would leave a painful vacancy for the rest of us. 
There are no exceptions. I really believe we would find out, if 
we did not know before, how special and needed each person 
is. 

We need to think: If I knew this was my last day on earth, 
how would I live it? How would I respond, to that younger 
sibling who stretched my patience? How would I react to that 
unexpected change of plans that interrupted my carefully 
scheduled day? How would I treat my family? How would I 
relate to my parents? 

May each of us strive to five so that if this were our last day, 
we'd have no regrets.

Our focus all on Jesus; His glory we will share.

The heavenly peace for which we groan is even here right now! 
We need not wait for peace, nor live with troubled heart; 
Christ calls, invites today, "My child, when will you start?"

MODERN IDOLATRY 

What is an idol? Paul writes, "We know that an idol is 
nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one." 
(I Cor. 8:4) He also reminds us that though we believe this, 
"there is not in every man that knowledge." 

To think of bowing down to a hideous carving of some 
imaginary creature is repulsive to our rational minds of 2005. 
But John closes his first epistle with, "Little children, keep 
yourselves from idols." Could we have idols in our lives of 
which we are unaware? Are there modern idols that are at least 
as wrong as the ones men prostrate themselves before? 
Colossians 3:5 identifies covetousness as idolatry. Jesus said, 
"Take heed and beware of covetousness: for a man's life 
consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he 
possesseth." (Luke 12:15) 

The first two of the ten commandments to Israel were about 
idols: "Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt 
not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness. . . Thou 
shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the 
Lord thy God am a jealous God. . ." Has God changed? We 
know He doesn't change. Idolatry in any form, in any age, is 
wrong. Idolatry is a substitute for God. This insults our 
Creator—our Heavenly Father who wants us to know Him. 

Since Paul says covetousness is idolatry, we should examine 
our lives for this fault. The tenth commandment is about wrong 
desires: "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt 
not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor Ms manservant nor his 
maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy 
neighbour's." These things were the riches and blessings of that 
ancient time. Though we are under a new covenant in Jesus 
Christ, these commandments showed God's will for His people.

Today He warns us against more modern things: computers, 
cars, vacation cabins, as well as those in the commandment. 

God has a plan for each of us. He tells us through Timothy 
to be content; it is a snare to desire riches. "But godliness with 
contentment is great gain." 

In this context Timothy writes that men of corrupt minds 
suppose that gain is godliness. In other words, they assume 
that when we are prosperous it shows we are doing things 
right— we are favored of God. He says "from such withdraw 
thyself." This dangerous doctrine can make us think we are 
godly when we are selfish. Careftd thrift is a Christian duty. To 
waste what God gives us is wrong. But don't think our 
efficiency and labor make us deserve God's favor. We know 
that we have passed from death unto life when we love the 
brethren— not when our bank accounts grow. 

It is not necessarily the riches but the desire that is the 
snare. "But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a 
snare. . ." Riches can be an idol even if we don't have them. 

King Solomon is an example of one who was blessed with 
riches, ability, and wisdom, but he let it carry him away from 
God and turn him to idols. 

Sir Winston Churchill could have said the finest hour of the 
British Commonwealth was during the long reign of Queen 
Victoria or when they were master of the seas and had 
possessions all over the world. But no, he said her finest hour 
was when London was being pounded by German bombs. 

In the history of God's people, "The blood of the martyrs 
was the seed of the church." God's people gain spiritually more 
in adversity than in prosperity. 

To have a heart single for God, lay up treasure in heaven. 
Jesus said, "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be 
also." This treasure of love and peace cannot be stolen and will 
not rust. Whatever we place above God in our devotion is an 
idol. Therefore the best cure for idolatry is a close relationship

to our Lord. Jesus told about the man out of whom was cast an 
unclean spirit. He cleaned up his house but left it empty, and 
the spirit returned with seven spirits more wicked than himself 
"and the last state of that man (was) worse than the first." 
When we let Jesus rule our hearts, it is like lifting the window 
blinds to let the light in; the darkness must leave. 

Do we give our time to pleasures, sports, entertainment, self 
accomplishments, education, business, riches? If these take the 
place of God in our lives, they are idols as sure as a statue or 
icon. No one likes a cheap substitute, and that is what an idol 
is. Let us be sure of where we place our loyalty, our affection, 
and our worship.— L.C. 



THE LORD'S PRAYER 

Thy Will Be Done 

"Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven." I have often 
found myself thinking as I pray our Lord ! s prayer: "That isn't 
possible that our Father's will would be done here like it is in 
heaven." In a way, that's right, but we have this part of our 
Lord's prayer for a reason. 

Viewing this world and world events, we see Satan 
wreaking havoc in the minds and hearts of many people. We 
see people losing their lives through natural and "man made" 
disasters. Wickedness is showing itself more and more. Is this 
the will of God? No, He is not willing that any should perish. 

We need to have a broader view yet. In light of eternity, 
our perspective changes. We have just prayed, "Thy kingdom 
come," and we know it will. As we pray, "Thy will be done," 
we can know assuredly that it will be. God wins in the end. 

Jesus Christ is our example, and we see Him exposing evil 
in hypocrites and expelling evil from the humble. We don't see 
Him coming to earth so much to conquer Satan as to save His 
people from Satan. Our Father's will is the same. He could 
come to earth and wipe it completely clean of all wickedness as

it is in heaven. Some day He will, but we have a merciful God. 
God is vexed with wickedness and death that are here because 
of Satan. He doesn't like to see what's happening here on earth, 
the pinnacle of His creation. He has chosen-which then 
becomes His will-to allow His creation to suffer and groan 
under the weight of a cruel taskmaster that He might be 
glorified in the end. 

So where does our part come in? We must also choose the 
same thing our Father has chosen. It must become our will. 
We cannot eradicate evil from this world. We are not given the 
power for that task. The broader view of eternity must be 
brought into the perspective of our own personal lives. Is my 
Father's will being done in me? Am I making choices that 
would also be choices my Father would made? Our choices and 
our will go hand in hand. The choices we make only reflect 
whose will we are following. What is God's will for my life? 
How can He be glorified most through me? These are all 
personal questions and must be answered in a personal way. 
May we all individually choose the will of our Father and thus 
we will be one in purpose collectively. 

St. John 17 is Ml of God's divine will for our lives. In verse 
9 Jesus prayed for us, not for the world, and in verse 15 He 
prayed ". . . not that thou shouldest take them out of the world 
but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil." That is God's 
will. Therefore as we are faced with evil, we can also know 
that we will be given strength to conquer. 

In John 17:24 Jesus' will is laid out so beautifully to the 
Father. "Father, I will that they also whom thou hast given me 
be with me where I am. . ." This was said by the perfect Lamb 
of God less than a day before He gave His life for the same ones 
He is praying for. With love like that we cannot go wrong in 
yielding our will to God's will and in doing so, his will is done 
on earth.

NONCONFORMITY 

(continued from last issue.) 

There are practical ways we can yield to Jesus Christ and 
allow the Holy Spirit to have total control in our lives. These 
have helped me in my Christian walk and may help others. 

Consistent prayer and Bible reading. We should never 
expect more from those we love than we are giving to God. 
Husbands, is your wife not attentive to your needs? How much 
time have you spent with God in prayer lately? Parents, are 
your children not obedient like you would like them to be? 
How many times did you disobey God in your heart today? 
These are very humbling questions for me. Personally, I found 
that when I started spending more time in prayer and reading 
God's Word, some of my "needs" weren't really needs at all, just 
selfish desires. Some of the disobedience I saw in my children 
was really a reflection of my own rebellious attitude toward 
God. In many ways my family's attitude and behavior toward 
me reflects my own attitude and behavior toward God. 

It is easier to give up those things in our lives that draw us 
away from Jesus Christ when we are spending significant 
amounts of time with Him and His Word. If Jesus Christ truly 
is our best friend, we should long to spend time with Him T 
Reading and meditating on God's Word will change the way we 
think and help us develop a thirst for the things of God. 
Through the Holy Spirit's guidance and prayer, God f s Word will 
become a guiding fight in our everyday choices. We will find 
ourselves reacting out of love and concern rather than anger 
and frustration. 

Simple obedience from the heart. I once worked with a 
man who had the reputation of being hard to work with. It was 
true. One day he accepted Jesus Christ and his attitude 
changed. He started carrying a huge Bible with him wherever 
he went. The subject came up one day, and he told me that his

Bible was a constant reminder to him that he was now a 
Christian and could not allow himself to go back to his old life. 
It was a simple act of obedience that helped him to be 
unashamed of Jesus Christ and a testimony to all that there was 
something different about him now. 

Obedience is more than conforming to a list of rules or 
living by a code of ethics. It is more than a list of places we 
don't frequent, activities we don't participate in, and a modest 
set of clothes we wear. It is an attitude of the heart. Things 
such as plain dress, a simple life, and abstaining from the 
entertainments and fashions of the world can be acts of simple 
obedience to Jesus Christ if they are done with the goal of 
bringing us closer to Him. The question we should ask when 
presented with activities, events, or situations is not only, "Does 
the Scripture forbid or allow this?" but also, "Will this bring me 
closer to Jesus Christ?" 

Simple obedience from the heart rarely requires extensive 
thought. Only when we stray from the truth and act out of 
selfish desire do we find ourselves bogged down in the 
wilderness of rationalizing and excusing things in our lives that 
we know do not draw us closer to Jesus Christ. Our conscience 
is a very good indicator of whether we are walking in the Spirit 
or fulfilling the lust of the flesh. If we find ourselves constantly 
having to "invent" reasons for what we do, say, and think, we 
are probably not headed in the right direction. There is a peace 
tliat comes with simple, yielded obedience to Christ that does 
not need explanation or excuse. 

Accountability. James tells us, "Confess your faults one to 
another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The 
effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." 
(James 5:16) We must confess our sins to God, for only He can 
forgive our sins. But there is healing when we sit down face to 
face with a brother or sister and ask them to pray for a specific 
fault that we have. If we are weak in a certain area, we can ask

our brother to pray for us and hold us accountable before God. 

Accountability to our brothers and sisters in Christ is critical 
to a yielded and victorious Christian life. The apostle John 
stresses that if we love God, we must love our brother also. 
We cannot have a spiritually blessed relationship with God 
while ignoring our brother or sister. I can personally attest that 
victory over sin in my life has consistently come when I have 
shared my needs with my brothers in Christ, and they have 
prayed for me. We have one of the greatest resources in the 
world right in our brotherhood: our brothers and sisters in 
Christ. Let us not be afraid to ask each other for prayer. 

I see "rudiments of the world" (Col. 2:8, 20) making inroads 
into our brotherhood and into many plain churches. I fear some 
of us are losing our devotion to Jesus Christ because we are 
unwilling to crucify the flesh and submit to God in our 
thoughts, desires, and actions. We must yield to God in every 
area of our lives if we are to be strong as Christians, as a 
brotherhood, and as a part of Christ's church. 

The dearest idol I have known, 

Whate'er that idol be, 

Help me to tear it from Thy throne 

And worship only Thee. 

So shall my walk be close with God, 
Calm and serene my frame; 
So purer light shall mark the road

DENYING OUR RIGHTS (Nehemiah 5:14-19) 
Seeing the Need 

In 539 BC, the Persian emperor Cyrus issued an edict that 
allowed the Jews in Babylon to return to their homeland and 
rebuild their temple. The Jews had been held as captives in 

Babylon ever since Nebuchadnezzar had conquered the

kingdom of Judah in 586 BC and destroyed the beautiful temple 
that King Solomon had built in Jerusalem. After Cyrus granted 
permission for the captives to return, about 50,000 Jews 
traveled back to their homeland in 538 BC. They rebuilt their 
temple after a delay of about twenty years, but the wall around 
Jerusalem remained in ruins. We read in the book of Ezra that 
some attempts to rebuild the wall had been made before 
Nehemiah's time, but these were feeble and futile. The events in 
the book of Nehemiah occurred almost 100 years after the first 
group of Jews returned to Jerusalem 

Nehemiah lived in Susa, the Persian capital, and was a 
descendant of the Jews who were taken into captivity almost 
150 years before. He had attained the enviable position of 
cupbearer to King Artaxerxes of Persia. Cupbearers were not 
menial servants who simply brought the king's beverages to 
him. They were trusted officials of high rank with the 
responsibility of making sure that the king's drinks were not 
poisoned~an easy way of doing away with an unguarded king! 
When Nehemiah got the report that the walls around Jerusalem 
were still in ruins and the Holy City was thus open to enemy 
attack, he was very concerned. After much prayer, he took 
advantage of an opportunity from the Lord to ask the king for 
permission to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the city's wall. 

In a marvelous answer to prayer and display of divine 
providence, permission was granted. In addition, the king made 
Nehemiah governor and gave him money and supplies to 
accomplish the task. Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem about 
445 BC, and after an inspection of the ruined walls, he 
challenged and organized the fearful, lethargic citizens to rise 
and build. The people of Jerusalem rose to the challenge, and in 
a great show of determination and hard work finished the 
project of rebuilding the wall in only fifty-two days-an amazing 
accomplishment! Parts of Nehemiah's wall can be seen in

Building the Wall 

There are lessons for spiritual wall-building that come to us 
from the book of Nehemiah. In ancient times, walls protected 
cities from enemies and provided security for the citizens to 
conduct their lives and raise their families in safety. Just as God 
wanted the city of His temple to be well-defended with strong 
and secure walls, so He wants the temple of His Holy Spirit 
today to be surrounded and protected by strong spiritual walls. 
Each individual today is a temple of the Holy Spirit (I Cor. 
6:19), and believers together as the church are also the temple 
of the Holy Spirit (I Cor. 3:16). Thus we see that spiritual wall- 
building is important both on an individual level and a 
community (local church) level. Building strong spiritual walls 
should be a priority for individual believers, Christian families, 
local fellowships, and for the church in general. Just like the 
people of Jerusalem in Nehemiah's day, too many Christians 
today are content to live with broken down spiritual walls. 

Satan, of course, as the enemy of our souls, will do 
everything possible to prevent us from building strong spiritual 
walls and keep us content with living in spiritual insecurity. 
Satan doesn't like to see churches that carefully proclaim the 
entire Word of God and that disciple and care for the flock. 
Satan doesn't want to see Christians who know God's Word 
well enough to recognize and reject theological error, or detect 
and avoid subtle temptation to sin. He doesn't want committed 
Christians with strong spiritual walls who can defend the faith 
and stand up against the threat of persecution. He doesn't want 
to see strong and secure Christian families where the children 
are protected from evil, and the Word of God is consistently 
modeled and carefully taught. All of Satan's various tactics to 
tear down our spiritual walls are seen in the book of Nehemiah 
in the efforts of Israel's enemies to stop the wall from going up. 
And all of Nehemiah's responses to overcome the opposition

are biblical principles for overcoming Satan's opposition to 
spiritual wall-building today. So building strong spiritual walls 
is a major theme in the book of Nehemiah with many lessons. 
Leading the People 

Nehemiah is a great book from which to learn the biblical 
principles of Christian leadership, important for all believers. 
Nehemiah was a man of vision. He saw that a job needed to be 
done, and rather than look for someone else to do it, he took 
action himself, looking to God for strength and direction. 
Every Christian can see jobs that need to be done and can take 
action, just as Nehemiah did. Throughout the book we see that 
Nehemiah was able to lead other people to accomplish God's 
will. By personal example, challenge, and exhortation, he was 
able to motivate the people to rise up and build the wall. Thus 
Nehemiah is a model of a spiritual leader— a godly leader whom 
people are willing to follow. In Nehemiah 5 is one of the 
foremost principles of Christian leadership. A leader must set 
the example at all times and under all conditions- even to the 
point of setting aside his own personal rights. Nehemiah did 
just that! 

As governor of the province of Judah with authority from 
the Persian emperor, Nehemiah could have collected exorbitant 
taxes from the people and taken a huge cut for himself. 
Furthermore, as governor he could have manipulated the 
project for his own advantage, to make a name for himself— 
even inscribing his name in stone on the wall. But Nehemiah 
did none of these things! He didn't tax the people and didn't sit 
back and "call the shots" without working on the wall himself 
And when he reprimanded the more wealthy people for selfishly 
taking advantage of the poor, he did not do so without selflessly 
providing for the less fortunate-out of his own pocket! 
Nehemiah denied his own rights because his bottom line was 
not to make a name for himself, but to bring glory to God. No 
wonder God used him!

Bringing Glory to God 

We too can bring glory to God by making sure we go "the 
extra mile" and deny our personal rights. We have little choice 
but to deny our rights when we are in an inferior position and 
can't selfishly take advantage of the situation, even if we wanted 
to. But we glorify God when we are in a position of power or 
authority where we could easily take advantage of others for 
personal gain or prestige, but we choose to set aside our 
personal interests for the sake of God's kingdom. Denying our 
rights may cost us in terms of status, time, and money— and may 
not even be appreciated by the very people we are trying to 
help. Don't look for thanks from people, or some kind 8f 
reward in this life! It's certainly nice if these benefits come our 
way, but more often than not, they are like that hoped-for 
yearly bonus—maybe next year! We should do what Nehemiah 
did at the end of chapter five. Just turn the whole matter of 
thanks or reward over to the Lord. "Think upon me, my God, 
for good, according to all that I have done for this people." 

Denying our rights is not just a biblical principle for 
Christian leaders to practice; it's a principle for all believers. 
Most of us have far less to give up than Nehemiah did when he 
denied his personal rights to serve God and His people. And 
the Lord asks us to deny our rights in every area of our lives. 
(Matt. 16:24) We need to read Philippians 2:3-5 and ask 
ourselves some questions: Does my life bring glory to God if I 
only deny myself in the interests of others at church, for 
example, but am selfish and demanding at home? How much 
glory does God receive when I serve and put others first in my 
Christian fellowship, but then don't deny myself in the interests 
of my co-workers on the job, or even my own family members? 
Denying our rights at home is probably the hardest of all 
because that's where all the masks come off and where it's 
easiest to push others around and demand our rights. We are to 
treat others with love and respect in every area of our lives.

The supreme example, of course, of denying personal rights 
is the Lord Jesus. Read Philippians 2:5-11 and think of how 
much He gave u$ when He denied His personal rights to 
become man, and take the penalty of sin for you and me! As 
His followers, we should be actively working at developing His 
humble attitude of serving others. We should be willing to lay 
aside our personal rights, our petty preferences and our selfish 
ambitions, and be willing to serve others in all areas. Let's deny 
our rights and glorify God.

OBITUARY 

Martha Emily Sell, age 83 of Bradford, Ohio, passed away 
Sunday, July 17, 2005, at home with family and friends. Martha 
was bom in Homestead, Florida, on October 23, 1921, to 
Lester and Carrie (Flora) Moser. She retired as a registered 
nurse at the Brethren Home, Greenville, and then worked at 
Piqua Manor Nursing Home. 

In her youth she was baptized into the Old Brethren German 
Baptist Church, Camden, Indiana. Martha was preceded in 
death by her parents, and husband, Simon Kenneth Sell in 1994. 
Martha is survived by her four boys she raised; Danny and wife 
Thelma Sell of Piqua, Chalmer Sell, Ted Risner, Dee Risner, all 
of this area; by the daughter she raised, Shirley (Penny) and 
husband Art Johnson of Florida; 28 grandchildren; 8 great- 
grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lewis and Grace 
Moser of Goshen, Indiana, David and Alice Moser of New 
Mexico; four sisters, Mildred and husband Owen Royer of New 
Paris, Indiana, Myra Skinner of Peachtree, Georgia, Barbara 
Manley of Hialeah, Florida, June Barnes of Montana; and other 
relatives and friends. Funeral services were held July 21, 2005 
at the Old Brethren Church, Bradford, Ohio. Interment was at 
the Sell Family Cemetery, Bradford. -The Family

THEMES FOR THANKSGIVING 

Thank You, Lord, for saving my soul; 
Thank You, Lord, for making me whole; 
Thank You, Lord, for giving to me 
Thy great salvation so rich and free.

In these words the poet describes the greatest blessing the 
world has ever known— the blessing of salvation. At this season 
we symbolize the good things we receive with a feast of turkey, 
dressing, pumpkin pie, and other rich food. But the natural 
blessings are only tokens compared to the goodness of God in 
giving His Son to die for us. 

Has there ever been in any time, in any place, more 
prosperity than we experience today? But are we more thankful 
than others with less? We tend to take blessings for granted 
when we have had them all our lives. 

We are like Israel when they wandered for forty years in the 
desert. God provided food-angels' food, it is caUed-every day 
for all that time. Their clothes didn't get old and their shoes 
didn't wear out. (Deut 29:5) God gave them directions where 
to go and when and where to camp. They had good leaders and 
victory over their enemies. And yet they complained. Men are 
like that. It takes adversity to bring out the best in us. 

To see an example of this, let us visit Brother Donald Kline 
in Merry Manor in Wakarusa, Indiana. From MS he is 
physically helpless. But as we enter his room we hear a loving 
greeting. He is interested in people and knows what is going 
on. Donald soon wants to sing and pray. A favorite song is 
"What a Friend We Have in Jesus. 11 His main theme is the 
goodness of God. He has many Mends; faithful friends even

take him to church in his wheel chair. We leave blest that one 
so handicapped can be so thankful. We walk out into fresh air, 
drive home in a comfortable car, eat a nourishing meal without 
help, go about our work and fun times. Donald could do all 
these at one time. But he wouldn't want our praise; just give 
glory to God. 

Colossians 3:12-15: Put on therefore, as the elect of God, 
holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of 
mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, if 
any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave 
you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, 
which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God 
rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one 
body; and be ye thankful. 

What a standard! With these qualities and with 
thanksgiving, we could not remain in enmity or division. There 
is true unity when we all strive to be like our Saviour who is 
perfect in the standard He gives to us. 

Reading on in verse 17: And whatsoever ye do in word or 
deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to 
God and the Father by him. 

Let us list some of the blessings of God besides the 
salvation Jesus brought: 

The open Bible. Before the Reformation, to own a Bible 
was a capital crime. Now we can buy one (the very words of 
God) for a dollar. 

The gift of the Holy Spirit. He points us to Jesus and to 
His Word. His power hi our lives enables us to live for God. 

The right to assemble. This basic freedom is guaranteed by 
the Bill of Rights in the first ten amendments to the constitution. 
Without this freedom, we might have to meet for worship in 
secret, in caves or dense forests where we would not be found. 

Friends, family, and fellow Christians. Some people have 
none of these—no one to visit them or to support in old age.

How blest we are with a multitude of friends who love us! 
How we should appreciate one another and be thankful! 

Warm homes and meeting houses. A Quaker pastor told 
me the reason Quakers wore hats in church was unheated 
meeting houses. They removed their hats for prayer. I am 
sensitive to cold weather, (typical of Californians, I suppose) 
and depend on a good heating system. My Aunt Orpha used to 
say that in cutting wood you were warmed twice! 

Good health. I have heard older ones say we don't 
appreciate good health until we lose it. We are thankful for 
expert doctors and health care givers, modem hospitals and 
nursing homes as well as those who care for their loved ones at 
home. All these are under God. He is the Healer of our 
diseases—the great Physician. 

Schools and teachers. One of the great blessings of 
education is the ability to read and understand God's Word. 
This was the driving concern of the first formal schools and our 
present Christian schools. 

Good government Some countries are straggling to 
establish a democracy of their own. They see the benefits. We 
have them already. Though we might be tempted, we should 
not criticize our leaders but pray for them. 

Children. Some don't care to have children. Some want 
only one or two. They don't approve of big families. But God 
does if they are His children. He calls children "an heritage of 
the Lord." Obedient children are encouragement for the future. 

Christian music. What is more inspiring than words of 
devotion set to reverent music? Read verse 16 from our 
Colossians passage. 

The list could go on and on. We are a blest people and 
therefore should abound in thanksgiving. — L.C.

ATTENTION 

Caution! Danger! High Voltage! These words are often 
posted in red or yellow to attract attention. Parents and 
teachers demand children's attention. Public speakers strive to 
gain attention. God wants our attention. Jesus told His 
disciples to "take heed." The recent events and conditions 
should gain our attention. 

The Bible student's attention is challenged by current world 
events. In relating to end times, Daniel prophesied: "Many 
shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. " This is 
a general condition that has greatly intensified within the last 
fifty years. Catastrophic events recently have devastated 
numerous cities and areas. Earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, 
floods, terrorist activity and many armed conflicts have become 
common news. 

Speaking of the last days, Jesus told His disciples: "And 
there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; 
and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea 
and waves roaring; Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for 
looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for 
the powers of heaven shall be shaken." (Luke 21:25,26) 
". . .There shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in 
divers places." (Matt. 24:7) Also He said, "And when these 
things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your 
heads; for your redemption draweth nigh." (Luke 21:28) "And 
as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the 
Son of man." (Luke 17:26) This could describe the present 
state of moral corruption. 

A Scripture that has gained my attention is found in Daniel 
12:7: ". . .and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the 
power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished."

Could this scattering relate to the fragmentation of the present- 
day Church? 

May we all be attentive to our place and responsibilities so 
we may be ready with our lamps trimmed and filled when the 
bridegroom comes. The Wise Men of old knew of Jesus' first 
coming by paying attention. Let us be aware of the signs of His 
soon return. "Pay attention! "

THE LORD'S PRAYER 

Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread 

As I thought over our Lord's prayer phrase by phrase, my 
thoughts on this part immediately went to our daily physical 
needs. We are asking God to supply our needs physically. We 
need to eat and drink. We need clothes to wear. We might be 
asking for good health and a warm, dry home. We know all 
these things are blessings direct from the hand of God. We are 
to ask Him for such things and thank Him for answering our 
prayer. 

Recently we heard an inspiring message on "The Bread of 
Life." Since then I have come to see this phrase in a new light. 
All of the above may be included in "Give us this day our daily 
bread," but it pales in comparison to asking for the Bread of 
Life. "Lord, feed us daily with the Bread of Life!" Hymn #342 
in our little black hymnbook says, "Our daily meat, Lord, let it 
be Thy will to do and follow Thee." The Bread and Water of 
Life is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. We are to be filled with 
Him daily. He is our sustaining nourishment. Without Him we 
will die. He is all we need. Jesus Christ is all-important. 
Without Him all the physical blessings we could ask for are 
futile, empty, and vain.

Soon after our Lord gave us His prayer, He taught us, 
"Therefore, take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or 
What shall we drink? or Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 
(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your 
heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 
But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness; and 
all these things shall be added unto you." (Matt. 6:31-33) 

It is much more important to implore our Father in heaven 
for the Bread of Life than for any earthly blessings we may 
need. Jesus says if we seek Him first and seek His kingdom 
foremost in our lives, our daily physical needs will be met. Too 
often we get the cart before the horse, so to speak. I believe we 
will be given all we need to reflect His goodness, His 
righteousness, and His kingdom. We can't look forward to 
prosperity while following Christ and partaking of Him. Instead 
we look forward to suffering, brokenness, and death to the 
carnal man. 

May we all be thankful for the bountiful blessing God has 
given us as we feed and drink ofHim freely.

ON MODERN CHURCHES 

I feel deeply impressed on this morning 

To give my brethren this most solemn warning. 

The church and the world are so near together, 

That it is hard to tell the one from the other. 

My heart is made sore as I look all around 

To see the old landmarks of the fathers torn down. 

The new fangled notions that the devil has given, 

Have nearly closed up the pathway to heaven. 

They tell us there is no lake of brimstone and fire

Where God will send sinners on the day of His ire. 

That man is not lost and totally depraved, 

And the vilest of sinners will yet be saved. 

The velvet-tongued preachers dare not preach the truth, 

But smooth things are proclaimed to the aged and youth. 

They are afraid to say "devil," "hell," and "damnation" 

For fear they will meet with disapprobation. 

They won't preach against billiards, cards and display, 

But will get up a picnic with the ladies to play. 

They will laugh and be merry with jubilant glee; 

They despise and reject such poor pilgrims as we. 

They say we are old fogies and the fashions won't follow; 

We are a set of fanatics and our brains are quite shallow. 

They say that our preachers don't have any knowledge, 

They've not studied grammar and have not been to college. 

They say we are walking far back in the rear 

And the truth of the times we're refusing to hear. 

That we are still holding the views of the past, 

While they are progressing so wonderfully fast. 

But I glory in this: that we are so far behind, 

Refusing to follow the sins of the times. 

For festivals and grab-bags and games, I would say, 

Are only designed to lead Christians astray. 

Now what's the difference? I see none at all 

Between the church fair and a nice billiard hall 

One gambles for souls and the other for cash. 

I tell you, my brethren, such religion's all trash. 

Their horns and their fiddles to God's house they bring 

And praise their Redeemer on silver-tongued things. 

They will get up a social the preacher to pay 

And laugh and be merry by night and by day. 

Why should a Christian dress in satin and silk 

While the poor are crying for bread and for milk? 

What a shame for a church with pride and her folly

To laugh and be merry and with sinners be jolly, 

While hell is wide open and ready to swallow 

The church and the world and its fashions will follow. 

The gold and the diamonds and jewelry so rare 

That dangle on saints as they kneel down in prayer, 

Would make Jesus weep and the devil laugh. 

Reminded of priest Aaron's wonderful calf. 

Would Mary and Martha and Peter and John 

Stew oysters, make ice cream and have a good time 

To raise a few dollars for the good of the cause, 

The gospel to spread and establish the laws? 

Beware little flock, for the devil's on hand 

To deceive and destroy every one that he can. 

To scatter the tares, his lies and deceit 

To choke out the work, the truth, and the wheat. 

My heart is made sad when the picture I see: 

The devil is trying to get you and me. 

How sad! the old landmarks are nearly all gone, 

And God's faithful few are left all alone. 

If the spirits of Peter and Paul should come back, 

They would brush the new fangled stuff from the track. 

They would turn out the preachers and shut up the pews, 

As Christ from the temple drove out the Jews.

family during Faythe's burn accident. The burns are healing 
very well. 

The Lord has been very gracious to us during this trying

thankful that His power is working through miracles and the

CHRISTIAN SCHOOL VIEWS 
The Consistent Teacher 

This article written for teachers, is also useful for parents. 
How necessary, how useful is the art of consistency! — L.C. 

Quietly the classroom waited. Every day they had story 
time right after lunch, and they knew what to expect today. 
Later in the afternoon, a student needed help with his lesson, 
but he diligently dug for the answer. But finally he exhausted 
all his resources and raised his hand to ask the teacher for help. 
She approached his desk with concern and patience, just like 
yesterday when he needed help. The classroom was so 
peaceful; everyone knew just how the teacher would respond. 

The teacher who is consistent follows the same thought and 
practice. In writing to the Corinthians, Paul said, "Be ye 
followers of me, even as I also am of Christ" (I Cor. 11:1) 
This challenges us to always be consistent. Children quickly 
recognize when things are not consistent. 

Classroom consistency involves schedules. The teacher 
attempts to closely follow a schedule and will try to help the 
children follow a disciplined pattern as they do their work. 
When schedules are followed, the children know what is 
expected, and this produces an attitude of rest. 

Classroom consistency is greatly influenced by the teacher's 
spiritual life. The fruit of the Spirit will be evident. Control of 
one's temper, speech, and moods will help the atmosphere to 
display Christ. Such consistency comes only when the teacher 
is surrendered to God and seeks daily to grow in His grace and 
knowledge. In a sense, such spiritual life will help the child to 
also covet such spiritual traits and may influence his choice to 
become a Christian. 

Classroom consistency involves the teacher's goals. The 
main goal will be to have Christ exalted. This makes a humble 
teacher. The teacher will have classroom displays, lessons, and

devotional lessons that point the students to Christ. Some 
teachers want the children to remember them later in hfe. But 
the best goal is that children might learn and remember true 
wisdom. Prayer in the teacher's life can help the teacher reach 
the right goals. 

I Timothy 4: 12 commands that we be "an example of the 
believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, 
in purity." These areas will provide a well-rounded, consistent 
testimony.

Wise Words 

An old Cherokee woman was teaching her granddaughter 
about life. "A fight is going on inside me/' she said to the girl. 
"It's a terrible fight and it's between two wolves. One is evil: 
she is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, 
guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false. pride, superiority, and 
ego. 

"The other is good: she is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, 
humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, 
compassion, and faith. This same fight is going on inside you— 
inside every other person, too. 11 

The granddaughter thought about it for a minute and then 
asked, "Which wolf will win?"

Playing by the Rules 

"Uncle Joe," Larry cried as he came running. "Bobbie isn't 
playing fair! We are playing Snap, and Bobbie keeps cards that 
should be mine." 

"Uncle Joe, I am, too, playing fair!" Bobbie declared. "I'm 
playing by my rules. " 

"By your rules?" Uncle Joe asked. "I hardly think your 
rules would be very fair, Bobbie. We must play games by the 
rules that come with them. Those are the only fair rules." 

"Why can't I make rules that are fair?" Bobbie asked. 

"Because you are one of the players, and you want to win 
the game," Uncle Joe answered. "The rules you make will help 
you win the game, but they won't give Larry a chance to win. "

"Who did make the rules for the Snap game?" Larry wanted 
to know. 

"The person who created Snap made the rules," Uncle Joe 
told them. "As the creator of the game, he knew all about it 
and just what rules were needed to make it work and be fair. 

"And that makes me think of our Creator and the rules He 
gives for our lives. Because He made us, He knows all about 
us and what rules are best for us. Where do we find His rules?" 

"In the Bible," Larry said. 

"Right!" said Uncle Joe. "Because God created us, He 
knows that foolishness is bound in the heart of a child, and that 
children sometimes disobey their parents and teachers. God 
also knows that when children do foolish things or disobey, they 
have a guilty conscience. He knows their guilty conscience 
makes them unhappy and naughtier yet. So He made a rule 
about parents using the rod of correction (spanking) to drive 
the foolishness out of the child's heart and to clear his 
conscience so he can be happy again. (Prov. 22:15) 

"Our Creator knows, too, that He created us with a longing 
for Him in our hearts. But He also knows that we try to fill that 
longing with the cheap pleasures that this world offers. So He 
gives us the rule, f . . .thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all 
thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.' (Deut. 
5:29) 

"God knows that even adults tend to be selfish people. He 
knows that without the laws (rules) that our government makes, 
we might not be considerate of other people. So He told us in 
Romans 13 that we need to obey the rules the government 
people make. What would happen if nobody obeyed the rule to 
stop when the traffic light is red?" 

"There would be a wreck!" Bobbie said. 

"And some people might be killed," Larry added. 

"Yes," Uncle Joe said. "God created us with the ability to 
love, and the ability to hate. He knows that hate cannot bring

happiness. So He gives us the rule to love one another; to be 
kind, tenderhearted, forgiving each other. (Eph. 4:32) God 
wants us to be happy. He wants us to bring glory and honor to 
Him. He knows exactly what we need to do to be happy and 
give Him glory and honor. We can read His rules in the rule- 
book He gave us~The Bible." 

"I'm sorry I wasn't playing fair," Bobbie said to Larry. 

"I forgive you," Larry said kindly. "Let's go play Snap 
again." 

Children, can you think of more rules that God gives us 
because He knows that we need Him? If you think of some,

When Jesus left eternity 
And came on earth to roam,

JESUS, WORTHY OF WORSHIP 

The scene is heaven before the very throne of God. A 
strong angel is proclaiming with a loud voice, !, Who is worthy 
to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?" No man was 
able to open the book in God's hand neither to look at it. John 
wept over this, but one of the elders said, "Weep not: behold, 
the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David hath prevailed 
to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof." What 
wonder when the Lion appeared as a slain Lamb; He took the 
book and began to open the seals. The book seems to represent 
the future God has in store for the world. 

A multitude of angels (100,000,000 plus 1,000's of 1,000's) 
loudly pronounced, "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to 
receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and 
honour, and glory, and blessing." And every creature in 
heaven, in earth, under the earth, and in the sea said, "Blessing,

and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon 
the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever." Could this be 
the time Paul wrote of to the Philippians that every knee should 
bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the 
glory of God the Father? We have opportunity today to 
worship willingly. How privileged we were recently to see 
young Navajos worshipping the Lord— believing His Word! 

The wise men from the East asked Herod, "Where is he that 
is bom King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, 
and are come to worship him. " This is wonderful because no 
ordinary king of the Jews, who were subject to Rome at that 
time, would have caused much notice, still less be worshipped. 
But the wise men had seen a miraculous star, the confirmation 
of the magnificence of the revelation and the greatness of this 
King. When they found Jesus in "the house" they fell down, 
worshipped Him, and gave Him gifts. 

Ten times in the New Testament men worshipped Jesus. 
How many other times are not recorded. Is He worshipped 
today? He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Have 
unbelief and evolution robbed Jesus Christ of the place He 
should have in men's hearts? 

John's Gospel begins: "In the beginning was the Word, and 
the Word was with God, and the Word was God. . . all things 
were made by him. . . In him was life. . . And the Word was 
made flesh, and dwelt among us." 

The soul-searching question for us is one Jesus asked the 
Pharisees: "What think ye of Christ? whose son is he?" They 
answered, "The Son of David." He is David's Son but also 
David's Lord and Son of God. He is worthy of our worship. 

Our beloved country of freedom needs a revival of the fear 
of God. Much celebration is going on at this time. Each year, 
as men grow more and more affluent, the Christmas observance 
grows. But God must be sad to see more celebration but less 
devotion— more lights but greater darkness-more blessings but

more sowing to the flesh and more unbelief. "Be not deceived; 
God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he 
also reap.*' 

Are we Christians faithful in our worship of Jesus Christ? 
Some seem to be satisfied to let evolution be taught in schools, 
but creation be taught in churches. Let us be convinced that 
these two are not compatible~they cannot both be true. The 
Bible speaks (Romans 1:25) of those "Who changed the truth of 
God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more 
than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen." May we 
resolve like the one who said, "God said it; I believe it; that 
settles it." 

To examine ourselves: Is the worship of Jesus part of our 
day? Do we sing 

In the morning I will lift up mine eyes unto my Saviour. 
In the morning I will lift up my voice to sing His praise, 
and then forget His claim on us? Is it hard to worship one we 
have not seen? John had seen Jesus with his eyes; he had heard 
Him, and his hands had handled Him. In I John 3:6 he writes, 
"Whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him." 
No, we have not seen Him with natural eyes, but with an eye of 
faith we believe and worship. Jesus told Thomas, "Thomas, 
because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they 
that have not seen, and yet have believed." Jesus also told him 
(and us), "... be not faithless, but believing." 

God places importance on our believing. Romans 10:9: 
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and 
shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the 
dead, thou shalt be saved." V. 11: "For the scripture saith, 
Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed." 

If we believe God's word, we know we should worship 
Him, and it is a privilege to worship; not everyone has the 
knowledge. Let us worship Him in spirit and in truth. The 
Father seeks such to worship Him -L.C.

THE LORD'S PRAYER 

And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors 

This subject is so vital to each Christian. To be forgiven, 
we must forgive. To be forgiving means we will be forgiven, 

Christ left us with a very monumental choice here in this 
phrase of our Lord's prayer. The forgiveness we all need is 
contingent on our willingness to forgive others. There is not 
one of us that hasn't faced this situation before. Forgive if you 
want to be forgiven. 

What is forgiveness? To forgive a debt would mean to 
write "PAID" across an unpaid bill. It would mean to no longer 
require any compensation for a product we supplied or a seivice 
we rendered. Forgiveness means no longer holding another 
accountable for a wrong that was committed against us. 
Forgiveness seems so simple to explain and completely beyond 
mortal man to attain. Forgiveness cannot be done with selfish 
motives or hoping for something in return. True forgiveness 
allows us to go forward, always. Without true forgiveness we 
will disintegrate, always. 

So, what is true forgiveness? It is no longer feeling the pain 
of a wound inflicted by a brother or sister, friend or foe. I 
would insert here that it is no longer feeling the pain; the 
incident which caused the wound may be a permanent memory, 
but the pain associated with it must not be. 

True forgiveness is the opposite of holding a grudge. It is 
the uprooting of bitterness. It plucks out the seeds of discord 
among brethren. 

I stated earlier that forgiveness cannot be attained by mortal 
man alone. I believe that. We have Christ's perfect example of 
forgiveness as He hung dying on the cross with the penalty for 
all our sins weighing Him down. As the blood flowed, He cried 
in intense pain, "Father, forgive them for they know not what

they do." Those words resound through time down to us. We 
are forgiven through that perfect sacrifice, and we also can 
understand how to forgive. We can think, "If Christ forgave 
me, I should also forgive my brother." But more importantly, 
we must think, "If Christ forgave my brother, then what right 
do I have to not forgive him?" 

Are we willing to forgive those who trespass against us? 
The wound they inflicted may be deep. Even if the 
consequences are still affecting you, you still need to forgive. 
You will not find peace until you can write "PAID" across that 
trespass—paid for by the blood of Jesus. The peace that will 
flow in once the step is made is beyond words and knows no 
end.

THE MESSAGE OF THE CAROLS 

It came upon a midnight clear, while shepherds watched 
their flocks by night, that Jesus Christ was born. It was a silent 
night, a holy night in the little town of Bethlehem that joy came 
to the world. O come all ye faithful to worship and adore Him. 
Come all ye shepherds that hear the angels on high; come three 
kings of Orient following the beautiful star of Bethlehem. 
Hither ye faithful! Christ is born in Bethlehem away in a 
manger. Jesus, Thou didst leave Thy throne and Thy kingly 
crown; heralded by the star of the East, You brought the 
unsearchable riches. O come let us adore Him, Christ, the

WHISPERS OF PEACE 

Trials of the day often overwhelm me; 
It's then I whisper the Name of Jesus. 
I seek His peace, and blessings I see; 
In Him, I place my faith, hope, and trust. 

I know God is watching over me; 
He knows what I think, say, and do; 
In His presence, each trial will flee; 
He gives peace, joy, and His love, too. 

Each day God gives new mercies to me; 
I am thankful for everything He does; 
There is none other to help me as He; 
In prayer, I whisper the Name of Jesus. 

The Name of Jesus is so precious to me; 
With Him, I stand upon solid ground; 
Where two or three, in His Name, agree, 
He, in their midst, will be found. 

When I come to the ending of day, 
I pause in God's presence, so tenderly; 
As I bow upon my knees to humbly pray, 
It's then He whispers His peace to me.
